I have a 97 FZJ 80 for sale but as you can see, it’s going to need to be towed or delivered to or by you. This 80 is unique, as it is a diesel conversion. The engine is an AM General 6.5L Turbo Diesel from a HMMWV (mechanical injection), but it threw a rod. So needs an engine rebuild or replacement. Other upgrades are included below.

Upgrades/Accesories:
3in Old Man Emu (OME) Suspension
33.5 In Toyo Tires
Front Disk Brakes
Reinforced Frame
OME Castor and Panhard Assembly
ARB Full Front Bumper with 9000 Warn Winch
Custom Rear Bumper with Tire Carrier Swing
Safari Snorkle and Cold Air Intake
Aftermarket Stereo System
40 Gallon Auxiliary Long Range Tank w/ Pump
Reupholstered Seats with Tan and Brown Leather
Duel Battery Set Up
Custom Roof Rack
24in Light Bar
-there’s more but this is off the top of my head.-

Again, you’ll have to tow or coordinate pickup as the engine threw a rod. So this is for someone who needs a mostly built 80 series and wants a small project. Remember that this is a diesel, not petrol, so any engine work will have to be diesel unless you replace or really clean the tanks. There’s over $40k invested into this beast (not including the engine conversion), and I hate to let her go but I no longer have the funds or time to tinker with it anymore (divorce). My contact info is below. Vehicle is located in . Asking $10000, but willing to negotiate.

Update: Vehicle is now located in Virginia Beach, VA.

I gotta ask, do you think or do you know if this will pass California smog? :p Serious question though :)

I would have to research it. I know it passed in Colorado, but I don’t know the emission standards for Cali.

Can you give some more details on the Diesel conversion? Does it use an adapter plate and factory transmission/xfer case or something else? 24v system? What kind of mileage was it getting? Does it still have AC?

The engine is mated to the original transmission/transfer case via adapter plate. It is a 12V system. While driving in city, I estimated it got around 18mpg, and highway was around 25mpg. As for the A/C, the lines were clogged and needed servicing along with the A/C unit needing to be charged; but never did it because I rolled around with the windows down most of the time. Now remember that this engine would need a full rebuild or replacement. Unless you decide to rebuild or replace it with the same engine (6.5L Turbo Diesel), then these specs will be nearly identical. Any other engine placed in I would not be able to give you the data on.

Understood. I have a 6.2 HMMWV engine sitting in my garage. It looks like I can use the 6.5 turbo on it. So at least I'll be in the ballpark.

There’s not too much of a difference between the engines honestly, as they are nearly identical in size. Even the engine mounts are the same. So you’d be set to go.

Yes it is 100% legal in CA and does not have to be smogged once you change it over with DOT. This engine is one of the few which is 100% legal due to being same class of engine as the LC. I know several people who have them in 80's on CA without issue and there is at least one on this forum who went through the build and approve process that lives down near Escondido
