Estimados,
I live in Ecuador, where I have a 1986 Toyota Landcruiser RJ70 (also known as the Landcruiser II or Bundera; four cylinder 22R engine). Its a great truck -- fuel efficiente and tracks better than my FJ70/six cynlinder 3F engine, though not as useful when wanting to pull out a stump or plow a field...
A bearing went out in the rear differential of the RJ70 and did a nasty job on the gear assembly. I need to find a replacement drive pinion and ring gear... The local Toyota dealer no longer carries the parts here in Ecuador, and it would be ridiculously expensive anyway (he said about $1,000 for the pinion and gear).
I once saw someplace on the web that the RJ70s had essentially the same rear axle as the lighter Hilux pick-up and Four Runners. When I asked the guys at Toyota this question, they were useless... I know the RJ70s were not sold in the U.S., but maybe the drive train specialists out there could point me in the right direction with regard to my options.
Would it be worthwhile to try to adapt a Hilux, Four Runner or some other rear axle to the RJ70 drive train? Any thoughts?
Thank you for your time and sharing a bit of your expertise!
Steve
