Hello everyone,

Ive been meaning to buy a swb 70 series land cruiser. So far, I have found what I believe is an RJ70/73: swb (maybe mwb actually), fiberglass hard top, 4 cyl, 2.4 L (I think) petrol.

I was wondering what the gas mileage would be on those petrol models because Ive heard that they are very thirsty. The car is in good shape so I am tempted to take it (trying to negociate the price). Please let me know what you think or how it compares to the diesel versions in fuel economy.

Thanks for your feedback on this. Cheers from the Sahel,

Peter

Hi Peter. If it has a f/g roof (FRP) it wilL be a 73 series MWB. Im not sure of the exact mileage but it will be in the low to mid 20s MPG,less if you think in US gallons.
I think you are better off with the gas engine in this model,I think its a 22R
They are a reliable and tough little engine.

The non turbo 2L diesel is very slow and the turbo version 2LT is notorious for blown heads.

Peter

For commparison the LJ77 (4dr) petrol with 22R and 250K on the clock and well tuned (we played with 1 for a year to get it running right) gets on stock wheels about 6k/litre (roughly 500-550k per 72l tank) and with 35" sneakers we get on a good day 4.5-5K/l (380-400k per 72 litres).

Hope this helps.

I just completed a trip into the Interior of BC, Canada., including much on gravel and in 4-wheel drive. I have a BJ-74, with a BT-13. The total trip mileage 1,240 km worked out to be 25.4 mpg (imperial).

Glenn I think you mean 13B-T?

Thats because the 13B-T has so much grunt down low. Mine regularly returns 8-11k per litre (22-30mpg imperial) or 11-9 liters per 100k which is pretty good for a loaded up jungle basher.

14B converted to 14B-T is even better :).

Thanks

Thanks a lot for the feedback guys. I think I will go for it. Side note: saw a BJ42, beautiful car but I figured resale will be really tough down here (Burkina) - not many collectors :)

Anyway, saw the RJ73 today and it is NICE. Good tip about the different engines, Rosco.

I will try and post pictures soon then. Cheers! :steer:

Im assuming your american. You could send the BJ42 back home as its more than 25 yo and the resale value in the US is not so bad;)
