If anyone is interested, I'm thinking an early AM (8-9am region) run to Rio Puerco with a potential new club member (met him today in Corrales--he owns a 40th 80 series...hopefully he'll chime in here soon).

I talked with Mr. Ruadhigh and he is in with his 40 series.

Thinking a quick run before it gets too hot. I also have to be at work by 3pm, so I would have to bugger out by 1-2pm at the latest.

Post up if you are interested....

Cheers.

Possibility...

Hmm.....

Sounds like fun, but can't do it this time. Take lots of water - it's bound to be warm out there. Have a blast!

Shouldn't you be addressing more pressing projects like...um...getting it running? :flipoff2:

Gotta go with Greg on that one...

Jon,

You need to git off your lazy a$$ and start working on that thing. How long has it been now? 5 Years, going on 6 ?

Enough already. You must get to work on that thing immediately!

Darn, you learn something new every day. I had no idea... none what-so-ever, that you needed working windows before you can get the engine running.

Do to recent abuse, I find it necessary to work in the garage instead of coming out to play :flipoff2:

Greetings all!

I guess I'm the "potential new club member," unless you have Beno out solicitating HDC on the corner. I'm Chad.

I'm a "new" owner of an 80 that I hope to equip and modify for expedition use and some moderate offroading. I'm not new to wheeling as I've owned 40's, a CJ7, a 90's Jimmy, and several other 4x4's that I enjoyed modifying and building. The 80 after many hours of research looks to be ideal for what I want from a vehicle without having to swap out every part that it came from the factory with (ie. Heeps N' GM's.) I just have to be ready to spend the dollars as I'm really looking foward to modifying it!!!

So I look fowarding to meeting & wheeling w/all of you. Count me in on Sunday. I'll be the one in the stock 80 w/the dinky semi bald tires but a huge grin on my face.

Oh yea, this seems to be some kind of ritual w/you all. :flipoff2:

Hi Chad!

There is a post somewhere that describes what to expect when taking trips with our group. Since you already have some experience you won't have any surprises. The best thing to do is to let us know when you need something 'cause we're not very good at reading minds and we tend to get all wrapped up in our own little world during the trips.

So, if you need to borrow a CB, let everyone know. If you need to get aired up (or down) and need assistance, then let someone know. If you want a spot or a lunch or a soft drink ... you get the idea. :D

I have several "portable" CB's with 12v plugs that anyone can borrow any time. Mag mount antennas too. You can pick up the radio ahead of time if I am not going (not sure yet.) It helps if you have some way to communicate with everyone on the trail.

-Mike-

Thanks for the offer Mike, I may take you up on that. I've installed my GPS, but want to install a CB in the ashtray slot. (I think I may have pioneered that mod 10 years ago with my old 90 Toyota pickup) Anything else I should have or bring?

I probably won't be doing anything difficult, Beno just invited me out to stretch her legs and let me see/experience how a modded cruiser will preform. I'm deciding on my lift right now & I'm leaning towards Slee's DIY 4" kit, but I'd like to see the J/L setup in action as it may be plenty for my needs (YEA - who hasn't said before?)

Nice--ya made it here as a non-lurker!

:flipoff2:

It was cool meeting you Chad on Sunday and we'll have a good time this coming Sunday....even if Mike can't make it!

:grinpimp:

I actually have Mike's extra CB/mag mount antenna. You are welcome to use that on Sunday.

C'mon Mike....Connie isn't that demanding!

:D

Chad,

Welcome to the club. Yes, we use Beno to solicit new members because he ain't good for much else :D

One thing I have to offer is this: Please, please drive several 80's equipped with various lifts to get a feel for what you like. Lot of us have gone through several renditions to arrive at the (almost) perfect balance and in the process, lots of $$$ were spent/wasted  Some of the suspension kits out there are well thought out, complete and works superbly well as a "kit".

Hopefully will meet on Sunday.

Oh, I almost forgot :flipoff2:

I was great meeting you as well Beno, eventhough I'm slightly dissapointed that you're not going to be able to show me how to do the seat mod. You're not even close to 6'5" ;p

If you could check w/Mike to see if he doesn't mind me using his CB, & if not bring it along.

Thanx

Yea, I've been lurking on Mud for sometime and realize that lifts usually start small and tend to grow as the person desires the ability to conquer more difficult terrain. I've done it myself and can't tell you how many thousands of dollars were wasted just in tires!!!! I do appreciate the advice though, as I can see that the 80's suspension is way more involved than the leaf sprung vehicles I've wrenched on. I was amazed how smooth Beno's rig was compared to my last lifted vehicle.

I hope to see you there as well.

No, I don't think Mike will mind. This was his spare he let me borrow and I've got a set-up now (just gotta set it up), so this will return to being a spare for club runs, etc....right Mike?

;)

And hell, my truck isn't even smooth. Wait till you ride in Mike's--it's a Caddy next to mine (his is also pristine :flipoff2: )

No problem. I even have spare spares in case some low life disappears with a loaner for a few months.

As for lift advice....

* Plan for your desired tire size.
* Plan the absolute largest tires you'll ever want to run on your 80.
* Figure your total weight based on your planned sliders and other armor.
* Add to the budget and weight for your recovery and expedition gear (drawers, winch, fridge, roof rack).
* Now you know enough to plan for the lift and suspension upgrades.

..... almost done now .....

And finally, add 2" to tire size and 2" to the lift and you're done. :D

Smooth? How can Onur's rig be smooth with all that crap painted on the sides. :flipoff2:

JK...You should see it pulling 4 wheel drifts out of the Puerco.

By the way, the other day I was out there. The obstacle that we watched the heavily modified jeeps go up, Jon and Ali tried up, and Onur has gone down was conquered by my 80.

Truth be told, I had two well placed rocks to almost clear my right slider (grind) to get up. Its doable but required a few action "clearance mods" to get 'er done. My 2.5 yo slept through the whole thing. My friend riding with me got out after the first attempt because he had had enough.:grinpimp:

I also went up a part I've never been up. Must have been an atv trail. I layed the left corner panel into the wall. No dent, just a few deep scratches. I hate to say it, but I can see my truck covered in Durabak in the next few years. I won't be repainting like Dan:flipoff2:.

Bring it on. She's been driving like mad since I put my "Lexus Trail Team" sticker on. Pink panties and all.

Mine's still at the beauty parlor. If I get it back on Friday I might have enuf time to bolt the armour back on and make it.
