Allright, it has come time to change my tyres (Dunlops MT) for something new... I have found an awsome deal with yokohama's geolander AT II. First off, i was wondering... does anyone have any experience with the tyre? second, what size is good... considering i have a 3f engine and live 2600 meters above sea level, and i dont want my car to be COMPLETELY devoted to wheeling...

and third, i have some pretty good magnesium rims which i like, but have been told they are too thick... 10 inches in order to run 32x11.5x15 tyres. What setup would you recomend rim wise, i definitely want a rim that wont rub or touch my callipers, so i was thinking about the stock steelies in 15x7 inches.

Whats everyone running!?

I ran a set of geolander AT II a few years back. IIRC the AT II was the latest greatest thing at the time. I ran 31x10.5x15 on 15x7 rims on my HZJ80. They were a really nice road tire but next to useless in mud or snow, and I think I only got about 45000 km (28000 miles?) out of them before they were illegal.

IMHO The only thing worse than them off road was the Yokohama super diggers they replaced on my truck, but then again they were nearly bald!!

I would be interested to hear what a few others think about the AT II.

FWIW I'm now running BFG MT 33x10.5x15 which I think are just as good on road, with a little more noise, and a whole heap better off road. These have 50 000 km on them and look like doing another 20 or 30 k.

Again, just my .02.

I can use spacers but i have some TERRIBLE vibration at 70km/hr right now and was told it was my 10 inch rims and possibly the spacers. I like the rims i have right now, but dont really mind the stock 15x7 steelies. i guess i have to give the spacers a chance, but definitely not with rims that wide....

Interesting feedback about the tyres, and since i will be using it offroad quite a bit... i might look into the MT's from yokohama... .02 on that?

thanks!

hey dude ... Yokohama IMOP make good tires .. but in your vibration issue maybe ( and just maybe ) you have balanced issues ..

Did you ran a lift kit . ?

I tried balancing and alligning 3 times, but it may be that the tyres are gone a little too bald and wont balance anymore. Still, i dont really want to keep my 10 inch rims with 32 inch tyres... maybe if i go with 33's? with 10 inch rims, anyone running that setup?

I had a set of Geolanders on my LJ78. I HATED them! They would wear in really odd ways and always had to rotate them. I bought the set brand new and there was one tire that just would not balance. Come to find out the one tire was out of round.

Plus from experience the Geolanders will get you into a stuck muddy situation and they won't do anything for you to back out.

The new Geolanders have good road manners but in my opinion are too soft of a compound for long life on road. I also did witness a one day old set of 35" Geolanders burn right through the side on their fist trip to the trails. Brand new tire wasted the first day. I have pics but can't down them right now.

You can run 10" wheels on 11.50 tires but I sure wouldn't want to off road. With that set up your tires will constantly be leaking from the bead or your tire will totally un-seat from the bead altogether.

IMO in you situation I would sell the set of rims you have. Use that money for a set of nice set 8" rims and buy a good set of BFG MTs in the size you mentioned above ( I don't think they have 32x11.50 but they do have comparable sizes).. BFGs are a very good tire on and off road and will last a long time. That has been my experience anyway.

Good Luck,

Randy

My best MT tires on road .. are the BFG ( better on road than off road, very nice sound a reliablility .. )

But if you like sacrifice a little bit on road and get better off road performance my best bet go with MT Grabbers ( General ) are very very nice mud tires .. good ones on road .. but leess reliability ( less than 30 k km) than BFG.

Aaaaa 33" X 12.5 my best bet in 15X8 ( 9 max ) inch wheels ..

seems like no one really digs the yokohamas... Definitely not going to keep the rims.. way too thick for anything really. Im goin to look into stock steelies and some other tyres, the BFG's are pretty darn expensive here, so ill have to look them up. Thanks for the feedback!

I dont really know... here's a pic of em. I like the design, they might not even be a name brand but they are somewhat popular here in Colombia.

Not the best pic, but you get the idea...

15X8 or 16X8 will be nice

Hi, you can fit an 11.5 wide tire on the 15X8 or 16X8, the original Rim on my 2002 FZJ74 is 16X8 and I run 265 70 16 TOYO open country tires (they are the original size). But my brother who has another FZJ74 used 305 70 16 tires and they were ok (No Rubbing), my friend who also has a 2002 FZJ74 also used 305's with no problem, the truck will be only slower and with the 3f you have on your truck I know it will even slower like my 1988 FJ62 with the same 3F engine.

I recomend 15X8 or 16X8 they are not small but also not very large, I think they just perfect.
