I haven't turned up anything through searches, I have the Haynes and OEM Engine Manual but no owners manual.

Can anyone tell me the approx. range on reserve with the HDJ81?

Had to drive about 20k last night with the light on 'cause power was out all over the bloody place - sure it's more than that but would like to know for peace of mind.

Thanks.

inquireing minds want to know...
what the hell are you doing driving a diesel that low on fuel? very bad for water contamination, fungi growth and sucking up crap from the bottom of the tank...

now to answer your question:
go fill up and see how many litres you have left over and times by 8 and you should be close...each truck will be different...

I answered this question in another forum, but my reserve light comes on with about 25 l of fuel to go. I don't like to run much below that. Wayne has used about 8 km / l for fuel consumption, which is a good safe number. I'm usually around there for fuel consumption, a little higher in winter.

.. I went home from work yesterday intending to fill up near home but the winds knocked power out everywhere within 30k radius.. only find that out driving all over to find a station open without luck. I never run less than a quarter and this was the first time my light ever came on. Wasn't too concerned (my tanks freshly flushed and I use treatment reg) 25l sounds about right as Martin says..

I'm curious what a factory owners manual from an 81 says but thats a good suggestion to get a close estimate. Thanks Wayne.

FYI, yesterday my light came on just a few km before I reached the fuel station, smack on the last (first?) notch just above "E". I filled it up with 79.9 litres, which means I probably had about 14 litres left (IIRC the tank capacity is 93 litres), however I doubt the last few litres can actually be picked up and are probably full of sediments anyway.

So let's say approx. 10 - 15 L reserve? My light came on and I pulled into the Husky - 82 Liters topped right up.

I would say so - depending on the level ;)

lets say, fill it up once the light comes on and record the liters and subtract from specified tank capacity for accuracy.
assumption could leave you on the side of the road...and who in their right mind would take a diesel down that far??

Of course no one is going to purposely push the limits of their reserve range just to see how far they can go - I was in the situation where after heading out on a 80km round trip the fill up point 30km along was unexpectedly closed with power out - and so was everyone else in an increasingly larger area with trees' going down all over the place.

I was pretty sure I could complete my trip and hope to find a station open back at home which I did after about 5km with the reserve light on, but would have felt better if I could have known an approx. range to expect without worry.

Anyways - now I know what a realistic range is on reserve should it be needed.

Dan,
i am trying to say anyone is stupid. just mentioning a caution for us all...

Reserve seems to depend on the truck. I've checked a couple and none are exactly the same. But like Wayne says, don't risk running a diesel out of fuel. Not a good idea. What I have done is take my worst tank ever (at reserve), subtract 10%, adjust for tire size, and use that as a max number before I fill up. That leaves a huge safety margin, and I've never run out of fuel, though once on a long trip through Alberta, I pumped in nearly 92 l of fuel. (That was WAY too close to empty for comfort.)

Are you sure about that figure and the reliability of the pump where you filled up (wouldn't be the first time a pump would shortchange a consumer)? IIRC, the capacity of the OEM tank is 93 litres...

The most I ever filled was on my 60, and it was starting to miss at the end with the road bumps, was 84 litres. (on a BJ60, capacity is 90 litres IIRC)

Anyone know the exact fuel capacity on an HDJ81? In any case, having the low fuel light come on at around "one eight" (bottom mark on the fuel gauge) with about 10 - 15 litres left would make the gauge seem fairly accurate.

Every factory spec list I've seen, as well as all the support material I've seen, state the HDJ81 has a 95 litre fuel tank. I can't vouch for the accuracy of the pump I was using, but supposedly, they are all tested from time to time, with huge fines if they are not accurate.
