Requesting FJ-60 suspension advice (1 Viewer)

I got an 86 FJ-60 and the suspension, with 179K miles worth of use, could use a little updating.

With a budget in mind, I want to change the shocks, leaf springs, and get some 33" tires and wheels.

I'm only looking for about a 2.5-3" lift, but would like to get both front and rear done get it clean then get some POR on it to get it ready for the winter. I want to be able to get where I am going here in CT and not worry about it rusting out.

Any suggestions are welcome. Didn't find what I was looking for in search, so I though I'd post.

Do a search in this section for "dakar lift with 1.5" longer shackels pics" and it will pull up a long thread about the set up I did on my 85 fj60. Research it a bit before you decide is my advice first.

well, i guess "welcome to the board"! also, you may want to use the search function. you can use this for just about any question you might have.

anyway, to answer your question...there are plenty of things out there to do exactly what youre talking about, and yes, as youve guessed, dependent on your budget. now, youre going to hear different opinions ranging from what to you use, what to buy, where to buy, blah-blah-blah! so take all of this with a grain... oh yeah, Fjsrule says, "Dont use Pinnacle"!!!! lol

*A LOT of peeps on this board use OME "Old Man Emu" setup. this is on your more $$ side, but to a lot of people is "the best"! dependent on what you plan on using your rig for, you can buy different "stiffness" of the springs from OME.
*i personally went with the BDS. i found it to be a little bit more in my $ range! the ride is great.
once you find a set of springs, youll want to replace your shackels, brake-lines, and shocks. i went with Daystar extended "greasable shackles", Rancho 9000/adjustable shocks, and fab'd brake-lines. OME has their own set of shocks, brake-lines, and i buhlee shackles.
as far as tireswheels, theres also a HUGE range of stuff out there...again, depending on $$. i went with 33'' BFG Mud Terrains and 4Wheel Parts wheels, blah, blah, blah.

rule number one...avoid jto outfitters and pinnacle springs
ome is considered the best, but you'll pay a small fortune for even their cheap springs.
i run alcans and love them...about $800/4...come with bushings. figure on another $50 for ubolts.

It's important to figure the total parts you'll need and the cost involved. OME kits (which I have in med-heavy) are all inclusive like those from Liquid Off-road. Many other spring suppliers will offer springs for $800 then 50 for this and 20 for that and then another 75 for... Sure many other springs are cheaper but for about 1400$ you can get an OME kit and others with everything included might be 1100 to 1399. As you read more people have done articulation tests on the different spirngs and OME twist like crazy. Other springs have been reported to have a hard time giving a good ride and articulate.

It's going to be hard to beat OME. They have it dialed, and I'll be their new Dakkar stuff is great. I have 3 years on a regualr OME kit on my FJ60 and it's perfect.

If I were to do it again, though, I think I would go with the Alcans. I have Alcans on my FJ40 and the ability to custom design what you want is pretty cool. Anything is going to be better than a sagged out stock suspension.
