Hey guys,
I am replacing the weather stripping around all 4 of windows (Cracked and broken). After removing one of the interior door panels I am getting stuck...

Observations so far:

1). The metal rails upon which the weatherstripping sit extend 4-5 inches below the window frame and with the window down there is no way to slide the rubber down inside.

2). Do I need to remove the window entirely, put the WS in the track all the way around first, then replace the window?

3). Has anyone else done this?

Any advice is appreciated!

I did my pass rear many a moon ago, but IIRC I worked the stripping in the channels with a little lube and elbow grease.

Remember KY is not just for your girlfriend.

I got stuck for a bit when doing mine at the same spot you're at.

Basically, yes, you need to remove the window.

  • Lower the window most of the way
  • Remove the two bolts at the bottom (don't lose 'em, they're a pain to find again....).
  • Take off the molding on the outside of the door that keeps the window from hitting the door. (This probably isn't needed, but I did it and it gave me a bit more room to slide the window in/out. Don't loose the little clippies.)
  • Pull the window out. You'll actually need to pull the back up until the window is rotated 90*. It then lifts up and will squeeze past the top of the door frame.
  • Rip out the old window channels.
  • Put the new one in. Double check that it's tight in all corners before putting the window back in. (I got the upper left corner, but didn't double check the right side near the mirror, and had to redo that side.)

That's about it. You can play with the setting of the bar that the window sits on (the window can sit more to the right or the left). I could only minimize the "nose dive" motion my window made (where one side goes down/up faster than the other), not eliminate it.

Note that I've only done the drivers window, the rest were in good enough shape that I didn't bother.

I didn't need any lube for putting the new window channel in, but I did clean it with soap and water.

The best way to do it is to loosen the bolt and remove the window glass, it is easy. You can just pull it out and slide the new one in, piece of cake. Just becareful if you have your window tinted. you do not want to scratch them up.

I just changed all four window channels. Had to remove the panels to get the job done because I needed to get my hands in there, but the window channels simply pulled out and the new ones went in with a bit of tugging and jollying to refit to the glass.

What are we talking about here? The soft rubber window channel that the glass slides in? If so, why are people removing glass? It simply pulls right out and slides back in. I removed the door panels for access and cleaning of the metal window track, but it took me all of an hour to do all 4 windows.

If you're not referring to the window channel, then I misunderstood and I appologize in andvance.

Did mine recently and just pulled out the old and slipped in the new, although it take some elbow grease to get them all the way down and in. No glass needs to be removed.

Pulling the glass isn't difficult and only takes a couple of minutes to do (time it takes to pop off two bolts and lift up).

Once the glass is out you can pull the old stripping out in about 15 seconds, wipe down the metal window run frame with a soapy rag in about 30, and pop in the new one in about 60.

No elbow grease (or any other type of "lube") required.

(Note I only did this for the front drivers window, it might not be as easy to remove the rear door glass.)

Thanks for all of the replies fellas! you have all been very helpful

The rears are harder to pull for sure. Fronts are easy if you want to pull them.

Can someone share the cost of the front windows channels (weatherstripping)?

$50-60ish from cdan, depending on his exact price (don't remember off hand).

are we talking about the same thing? I am talking about the two pieces shown in the pic.

These pics are of the inside piece. I want to replace both the inside and outside piece.

So do you have to take out the glass to replace these or not?

I wasn't talking about those Concrete, I was referring to the channel the window rides up and down in on the sides and then seals at the very top. I do not know about the ones you are replacing, although I wouldn't mind doing those as well.

"So do you have to take out the glass to replace these or not?"

No...just pull off the door panels on the inside and you will see how they come off. There are little pins that hold them on.

Even the weather strip on the "outside" of the glass?

I bought the set of four (4) Window channel weatherstripping pieces for $280 from a dealership (I negotiated them down from $310).
I am new to this board and was not aware of Cruiser Dan and his parts connection so I was not able to pay his price of ~$210 :bang:

And for someone else who asked - I am referring to the rubber strips up in the door frame window channels that the window rides in as it travels up -or- down.

Not sure about the outside of the glass but I imagine it is held on in a similar way. Shouldn't have to pull the window.

Thanks. I'll have to call cdan.

Concretejungle had a question here about how to replace the weather stripping on the outside (see his referenced picture in post 13).

I have traced my wind whistling to a 6" spot along the PS window and with duct tape on that spot, I get no whistling. I've ordered the weatherstripping and need to understand how to pop off the railing and any other info on how to replace that piece of rubber.

Thanks,
Paul
