My 70s's all have kinda worn steering boxes and I finally decided to do something about it on the 1994 Omani Troopy. Normally I would just buy the original OEM but the 75 series boxes are getting a bit hard to find. @cruisermatt has pushed me a few times to try an upgrade to a 76/78/78 box but I've just been too cheap.

I was going over in my mind the work done to date on the Omani Troopy I realized that every system except the steering box has been rebuilt from scratch or replaced with new OEM except the steering box, so I took the plunge.

Here is the new box installed:

1762973218726.webp

1762973237079.webp

44110-60440 steering box

45411-60380 Pitman arm

45351A - NUT, HEXAGON(FOR SECTOR SHAFT TO PITMAN ARM SETTING)
90170-22058

WASHER
Genuine Toyota, Genuine Daihatsu (9451102200)
94511-02200

And just have a look at the difference between the beefiness of the 75 vs the latter series:

It is a bit hard to tell from the photo but the spline shaft has a substantially greater diameter and the arm itself is a lot thicker.

BTW, @cruisermatt sells these if you are in the US and want to make the change. He's offered me attractive pricing. I've just been too lazy and cheap to do it, but the Omani Troopy here in Dubai kinda pushed me over the threshold. Thanks as always to Matt for confirming and/or actually providing the part numbers. He's been pretty patient with me.

This has been documented many times in the past. Both regarding the 80 series as well as the 70 series in terms of its backward application.

The real reason I posted was that I was really struck by the contrast in the pitman arm. And to say a public thank you to Matt who really has been after me to do this for quite a while.

I think I put a 105 box in one of the 80s.

Apologies for the duplication; feel free to delete if you don't feel it adds anything and just adds noise. My feelings will only be very slightly hurt.

A sincere thanks for the work you do as moderator @OGBeno

Should be 44110-60440, as seen on your photo of the box.

Great upgrade and nice to see all the part numbers in one place. And good to know @cruisermatt has these, especially if at an attractive price.
Thanks for spotting the typo, SV. Corrected now!

Matt has been putting a real focus on his parts business. Worth doing a query to him when buying several Toyota parts. His shipping moves right along but the most significant thing is that he will apply his knowledge and suggest changes from time to time. Kinda reminds me of SOR in California.

I would second @cruisermatt support and professionalism. He helped me with a host of items for my 60 and will have my business for the 75 as the needs arise.
