It looks like my carb is destined for the great Toyota dealership in the sky.

If you've replaced the Aisin carb in your 2F engine - what did you replace it with ? What are my options and what requires the least (or no) mods to install ? My local mechanic - who I thought I was developing a good relationship with - seemed a little put-off after being on the phone for several hours without any luck...

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated....

Mark

Why?

Why replace it? The carb is an incredibly simple machine. It only has a few moving parts. They rarely wear out. Usually all that's wrong is the rubber bits need replacing after 20 years, and all the dirt that was ever in the fuel tank has found it's way up into the small passages of the carb. A thorough rebuild and some strategic improvements will yield a carb that's better than new.

Use the search button to get the names of some shops that specialize in that type of work.

Like Jim here, for instance.

Edit: oh, and to answer your question - a PO put a Carter AFB carb on my 2F. It does alright but sucks off-camber. Sometime soon I'm going to have JimC rebuild an Aisin for me.

or just send it to Ohio:D have heard good things about "someone" there;)

if it's your daily driver, pick up a used one cheap and rebuild it yourself or have it rebuilt, Jim above is pretty well renowned for his carb skills on here. no personal experience, but if i was going to have someone rebuild it I'd look to him first.

that's the simplest. a weber works allright, but if I replace the carb on my 40 again, I'm going to rebuild/get rebuilt one of the aisin carbs I have sitting in my garage:D .

oh, and I paid $50 for a aisin for my 60 that I put on (planning on rebuilding the old one someday) and it runs fine for now. got it in the for sale section here

I would highly reccomend sending the stock carb to JimC for a rebuild. No reason to look into any other brand of carb. Jim does excellent work and you will not be dissapointed with the results. I speak from personal experience.

Mark, I'll do away with the obtuse references in this thread - FJ40Jim who answered your question first is the Jim Chenoweth who is one of only two people I would trust to rebuild my Aisan carb. In fact, I did have him rebuild my carb and distributor at the same time.

If I were you, I would contact Mr Chenoweth, or Mark of Mark's Off Road (65swb45) www.marksoffroad.net and get that Aisan rebuilt. Don't get rid of it...

Alright then......

I see there is a definite concensus here... keep and rebuild the carb. Being in Canuckland, I was hoping for someone a little more local - but no one wants to touch this thing for me. Jim... PM coming your way apparently

Thanks for the input to all !

if this means anything
.I put a 350 holly on mine and got a very powerfull result. it took a lot of time on a dino machine and changing components, but at the end i getting far more power for the fuel i am delivering to the engine. my 2cents

Pffft use a F throttle body and shove a propane carb on it :flipoff2:

I went with a non-usa carb from Nardek in Australia. It bolted on and has worked awesome. My cruiser is a dd and I didn't want to drive the dump truck for the down time involved in sending my carb to Jim C.

How does the Holly do in off-camber situations?

Thanks again....

...to everyone for the help.

Lots of good suggestions and input !

Sent Jim an email about price and turnaround - my 40 is not a daily driver - yet - more because there are some bugs to work out on it.

i have a weber 38 now, but when funds permit i'm sending an aisin off a '75 to jim.
from what he told me 1975 used the largest carbs toyota ever put on a cruiser, pretty sure he said they are a 38mm carb.

OOoh, I likey that too!

That's the poor man's (me) EFI.

I guess if you want to call it that. A lot simpler to essentially fuel inject your motor w/o all the wiring crap.

Back on topic, go with JimC or Mark Algazy. I had my 76 aisin carb rebuilt by Mark with the performance mods to it and my 2f actaully started flying down the road it was amazing.

Go stock. I have a stock one on one cruiser and it does good. I have a webber on another and it sucks, did this when it was the right thing to do on the LCML. I have another cruiser i am building right now and if i can not build the carb right myself it is going like the first one did to Jim.

The 75-76 Aisan carbs are 38/40 throttles and 31/35 venturis.

The common weber is 38/38 with only 26/26 venturis.
