I need replace my dirty power steering fluid too. Why not just undo the return line, start engine and turn wheel from side to side to pump system empty, then refill?

Same here. You guys keep talking about "ATF" fluid. Transmission fluid in the PS system?

Yes. I use M1 syn AT in the PS.

Well I'll be dipped in s***. I'll do the same! When do you guys jump off the bridge?

A brilliant statement for your tenth post. Very entertaining, pls keep these gems coming

I go to Tractor Supply and buy a 5 gallon pail of Agricultural Hydrolic Fluid and use that for everything - PS, Diff, Transmission, TC and engine. Such a simple solution and no longer all those jugs and cans taking up valuable shelf space in the garage.

Please tell me you are joking...

Thanks Zane for the nice step-by-step writeup. My 2000 was whining like a ***** at start up (20F cold days) and as I turned the steering wheel. Thought I had a bad pump until I checked the fluid level, low and dirty. Just finished a full douche using 2 Qts. of Dexron VI in an hour and have no whining. Used your hose technique with the exception of purchasing a stop plug for the short hose, just crimped and duct taped one end. Total cost $22.00.

Thanks for the write up... Just did this task and it wasn't bad at all. Power steering system had been filled up with regular clear fluid from previous owner at least a year and half ago.... No problems or sounds just knew I had to swap fluids to correct atf type..

I purchased several feet of clear hose and some brass fittings to attach to the power steering fluid box and the return line.

Sorry for the potentially obvious question: what's the diameter/size of the hose? I'm assuming this is something I can pick-up at HomeDepot?

See post #9. 3/8 ID and yes everything is at HD.

First and foremost thanks to the OP for the write up.

Doing the usual base line of swapping out fluids on the '98 LX.

I have a few questions regarding the new p/s fluid.

I don't have a owners manual so I'm going off Lexus pdf.

It states I should use Dexron 2 or 3.

I cruised over to Toyota and they supplied me with this.

I should have done this first, but I consulted my cousin who is a Toyota Tech and he advised me to use the following. Toyota carries this product as well.

I would like your opinion on what fluid to use before I do the above fluid flush procedure.

Thanks fellas.

I've always used ATF. Not sure what the other fluid is, but it's probably just hydraulic fluid by another name.
I vote for ATF .

ATF. Mobil One ATF Multi Vehicle Synthetic. I've used it for 10 years in power steering pump, flushing ~10k miles or sooner.

Bump

Racks on my 99 tlc and my 06 sienna are at slow leaks. I want to top off the reservoirs. Recommendations on what to use? I have no ideas what they're holding now. Toyota dealer is pretty far from me.

I know it's an old post but the dealer recently changed out my ps fluid as well. At first I thought they used power steering fluid since it's clear, but it would make more sense that they used that stuff.

G'Day Folks, I am incneed of doing this myself (on my BJ73 - LC), so I Googled this up for a look see.
I came up with this You Tube video, which I like the sound of, as it makes sense.

Hope ths helps;
