Now that the weather is getting colder the liftgate struts on my 2016 LC are not adequate for lifting the gate up all the way with the Gobi ladder mounted on it. Has anyone had luck with “stronger” struts that can support more weight (the liftgate w/ a ladder) and work better in cold weather. One of these days I’m going to get a nasty bump on the head!

Thanks, Willy. They don't list an option for a 200 but I may check with them. I need to know if they are stronger than the stock struts. Mine aren't worn out as much as they simply aren't strong enough.

That's interesting yours isn't up to the task because I have the same ladder which I also mount my trasharoo to. Last weekend I had the trasharoo completely full of trash for 4 people over 2 days in it mounted onto the Gobi ladder, and the tailgate opened up with no issue and even stayed open without propping it. I usually don't do that, but we were headed home and wanted to grab something out of the fridge. I wonder if you replaced with a new oem set if it work better or perhaps the 16+ is a different part?

Found a pic and forgot to mention I even throw firewood in there too:

Hmm. Matt, that is certainly more weight than I ever have on mine. I’m not saying mine doesn’t open. It just doesn’t open all the way unless I intentionally push it to the top. I am used to getting it started and the struts take it all the way to the top. Now they only take it as high as my forehead. :bang:

Definitely sounds like they're worn or the part switched to a softer opening than on my because I just get the thing started and it opens all the way up. I still wouldn't mind stronger ones though, and it would be cool if you could lock them in the raised position with a clip like on old school screen doors at home.

yesterday I drove through my neighborhood to return a borrowed ladder. I had the tail gate hatch up and in the raised position with my windows down - nice air flow, wish our trucks had a configuration that allowed this, via power rear window. pipedream - back to strut talk

That's the one feature I really miss from my 3rd gen 4Runner

Bummer

Does anyone have the part number for the stock struts. Mine are on their way out and need replacement.

We have a Gobi ladder mounted and a Roto Pax 2 gal gas can attached to it. The struts are working like you describe @Dan Higgins Would like an option to replace the struts so the trunk lid doesn’t hit me on the head.

No idea if you need the #3 stud.

On our FJ62 & Xterra, mcmaster-carr was the source, but part #s & greater
Extension/Compression Force values were posted on ih8mud or thenewx.

I used these. There is a thread around somewhere too.

well, the lx has a power lift gate which may matter, I don’t know. I don’t use the power lift gate anymore as my tire carrier blocks it, and I can report they open and close fine manually.
