If you use actual washer fluid, it acts as a lubricant and can extend the life of the components.
Distilled water has no lubricity to it and may a partial cause for early failure.
Well, I tried that with the first two I installed. Then I read a thread about trying distilled water. The thought was that the crusty white material left behind when wiper fluid dries may cause, or contribute, to the failure. For future reads on this thread using distilled water did not prolong the life of the diverter.

I noticed one of the chemicals used in your run-of-the-mill washer fluid has methanol in it. Could that be causing failure?

I also found some washer fluids sold without methanol it, so maybe try running that when you replace it again?

"But methanol can have problematic effects on rubber seals such as o-rings, causing rubber swell in methanol-producing equipment as well as in seals where methanol is used as an additive."
