have you done your rear upper and lower control arms(and/or bushings) I replaced mine(new toyota) a few years ago and all my steering/tracking/slop issues went away, it went back to being like it was when I got it with 70K on it. I have never done anything to the front end besides replace the sway bar bushings.

My bushings where not blown out but they did have cracks.

Thanks to all who have taken the time to share their experiences.
I just did this on my 2002. It felt sloppy to me and the only way I can describe it is that it felt like I was driving between bowling bumpers. This seemed to be the likely place to start as nothing else was visibly loose, ball joints etc. My bushings were in much better condition that others pictured. With that said, the two DS bushings easily pushed out with a screwdriver. From the little driving I've done I can tell a small bit of difference. I'm not sure if I've been spoiled by driving a new modern vehicle or if this (new to me) hundy is in need of further attention.

After driving for a couple weeks I'm completely amazed at the difference in the steering. With the exception of the wiggle in the telescoping portion the steering, it feels spot on! Cheapest notable repair I've ever done!

Has anyone ever seen a bushing disintegrated? I was removing my bushings today when I found the driver side front one completely mushy and gone. Around it on the cross member was this black gunk which I am guessing was from the bushing. I know I have an ongoing power steering leak from the hoses which I am planning to replace when they arrive but I wanted to see if I should be looking for something else. Hoping the new steering and sway bar bushings help with the random VSC issue the vehicle has been having since January.

Mine looked similar with 100k miles on them...Get the chisel out and start working on the "metal sleeves."

@awesomeissquid Motor oil can often disintegrate rubber bushings and belts. Check for leaks on that side.

Am I missing something? I thought it was just the metal inner sleeve and the rubber bushing all around that. Is there another sleeve around the outside of the rubber bushing that I need to remove? This is a MY2000 that has the older style rack.

Thanks for the tip! I will need to do another look.

Does anyone have the FSM page for the older style rack with the PS D bushing and the two DS donuts? I only have the 2003+ one and I wanted to confirm the torque value for the 4 bolts on my 2000 year one.
Thanks in advanced.

Just wanted to contribute, but I had a hell of time getting the replacement bushing on the DS to pop in, I didn’t have longer bolts that were the correct size but I had a 1/2” 6” long bolt, still not being able to get a wrench on top, I hand threaded the nut a few times and had a second nut on the bottom. Then used this “jig” to press the bushing into place....then just removed the jig and was able to use the existing nut and bolt (I know I should probably replace them, but whole rack will be replaced at some point...

hopefully this helps someone

Heads up to anyone else, Slee stocks rubber rack bushings for newer style design like whats on my 2006. So you’ll have to decide between poly and rubber.

Did any of you guys experience loud squeaky noises before replacing the bushing?

Yes but you should also check all of your ball joints...
