I am wanting to replace the bulb that back lights the transmission shift position (Floor Shifter) right in front of the center console.

Can anyone tell me how to access it? Perhaps remove the entire cover there...or is it simpler than that?

Thank You in advance,

Flint.

Yep, pull the cover. Once its off, its pretty clear where you have to twist the lamp socket to get to replace it. That is the only way I know to get to that bulb

Thanks guys.

I usually just smack mine and the light comes on. Guess I should get in there and see what's loose eventually.

Hah, part of my gauge cluster back lights would respond to that too. I just replaced those lights recently with white LED's. I found the bulb 'bases' (4 of them) to be surprisingly loose in the board. The bulb bases twist into place and the connection with the board is via the camming action of the base.

The new bases I ordered with my LED's fit much tighter than the OEM's, so I don't expect any trouble from them.

Here’s a visual aid along with the bulb number you can get from any auto parts store. This bulb also fits your glove box light and ashtray light, if those are important to you.

^^^^^^^^^^ Excellent! Thank You. I am going to replace mine with an LED..but good to have the bulb number.

Thanks again for your contribution.

There's supposed to be a light there? Guess mine's been out...:hmm::hillbilly:

Update: Done.

Easy Peazy.

Move transmission shifter to neutral position (be sure your parking brake is on or chock the wheels). Move T-case shifter to 'low' position, then remove its shifter knob. These positions will best allow you to raise the shifter cover enough to access the bulb.

There are four screws holding the cover in place. (Two) on each side at the front most portion toward the firewall and (two) at the rearmost portion close to the center console. The rearward mounted screws are best reached by moving the driver and passenger seats all the way back.

Then carefully lift the cover up and rearward. The leather T-case shifter boot will slip over and off the shifter. The shifter cover will hang up on the transmission shifter handle but will be high enough to expose the light bulb receptacle. See post #7 above.

To remove the receptacle (facing the shifter from the drivers side door) turn/twist it Clockwise 90° and then simply pull straight down. The bulb is a type/number 74 bulb (wedge). The factory bulb appears to be a white bulb with a green cover on it.

I first thought I'd replace it with a white LED, but decided that would be too bright, so I stayed with a green LED.

It is a simple 10 minute job (if you don't stop to clean out all the small stuff that collects on and under the cover).

Nice! Are there red tinted versions available, or does the greenish come from the shifter. Anything but red really messes with my night vision driving. I have color blindness issues I believe.

If you go with LED....yes red is available.

The color of the LED will show up through the positions (P,D,2,L).

The position for reverse (at the shift indicator is colored red, so will appear extra red, the neutral position is colored green, so will be darker when the red hits it.

The other positions on the shifter (P,D,2,L) since they are white... will show up as any color bulb/LED you choose to put in there.

Look at the photo (non-lit) in my post #12 above and you will see what I mean.

To preserve your night vision...RED will be the best color for you. You may not have color blindness issues but instead low levels of Rhodopsin in your eyes. If your night vision is slow to 'recover' that is likely the problem.

Thanks! I have really bad issues with the older sodium bulbs in street lights when it rains. So much so I have my wife drive in those situations. I tried some of those color blind glasses... that was a trip. Doc said it’s red green, but shades of said colors, not necessarily those colors. But like you said, Red is way easier on the eyes for me. Thanks sir.

Pulled this thread up from a search.

I’ve got my bulb fixture off and just just flopping loose on the wires. But to remove the bulb !!!!! The bulb is really stuck. It doesn’t seem to have its own base like a lot of the bulbs in the dash. It is really stuck, I’m afraid I’ll rip the little green condom if I dont force it correctly. Is it a push and turn counter clockwise to pop it out ?

Bulb just pulls straight out of the socket. Don’t worry about the condom, It looks better raw anyway.
