This is one strange nut. I'd like to replace the timing cover seal behind it, is there a special process? What size is this thing? I guess u have to buy some sort of special tool to get over those auger like protrusions?

Also, this is my spark plug socket, it won't fit over my plugs, I thought these dudes were standard, does something stand out about mine?

If I remember right I bought a 54 mm socket at northern tool used air impact and done. It took a few trigger pulls but the socket fit nice.

The crank nut is 46mm, needs to be deep enough to go over the hand crank ears. 13/16" was the standard spark plug size, 5/8" is the "newer" type.:hillbilly:

I'm going to have to do something because this has become a huge mess.

I can't keep the pulley from turning since everything is apart. I bought the 46mm and put it on my big torque wrench & pb blasted but no luck, my brace slipped and bent the pulley and broke a fan blade (i'm cussing on the inside, can't you hear it?) All of this for a %$#()%*$ oil leak I should have left alone. I don't know what to do.

I'm currently rebuilding an engine (not a 2F), and I had to use heat (basic mapp gas torch) to get the crankshaft nut off. JD

IS your flywheel and starter still conencted?
IF so, put the socket on a long breaker bar and lay the breaker bar agains the frame. Give the starter a crank and it should bust the nut loose.

I used a ratcheting strap wrapped around the grooves and anchored it to the frame to keep the pulley from moving. In the junk yard a breaker bar and pipe for leverage worked to remove the nut. In the garage the air impact wrench made quick work of removing that nut.

Thanks guys. I just sort of had a heart attack after damaging the pulley and looking up the price on line, apparently they aren't giving these things away….I'm going to do some hammer work to fix it.

I wanted to use the flywheel but I sent my bolts off to be plated so I can't reattach it to use. I tried some alternates to the ratcheting strap idea but they didn't work. Found out my buddy has an impact, hoping his compressor that's portable will do the trick tomorrow and he has one of those strap wrenches too. I'll keep you posted. I'm pretty sick about the bent pulley though.

It must be clean livin' but I've always been able to get them off with a socket, breaker bar and pipe cheater. Tubalubb, snce you have the pan off you can slip a hardwood block between the crank and the engine block (near a crank journal where it's strong) to lock the crank/pulley and keep it form turning.

Thanks guys, you've all been really generous. I'll see how tomorrow goes and examine it after it comes off. I'm just upset about my careless rigged up job that damaged it in the first place. Hopefully this impact wrench will help although, the board idea sounds pretty good too. A long enough pipe ought to create enough leverage. I'm really just kind of finding things while I wait for some parts and I already had this seal so I figured I'd change it...
Now if I can just figure how to scrape the rest of this old side cover gasket off, what a mess. I'll post photos tomorrow.

Well, my buddy had a chain wrench and he held the pulley steady for me while I cranked on the torque wrench and the nut broke loose. I'm afraid the pulley really isn't in good enough shape to use since my earlier bracing attempt solo broke free and damaged it. Anyway I sent a pm to Radar as he kindly offered he may have a spare.

More on my endeavor on my other thread, not sure anyone is reading it but I figured I would keep my efforts somewhat consolidated..

Thank you again for all of your assistance

An impact wrench will do the trick next time! No need to hold it.

Yep, got to love the impact, works great and doesn't destroy the old parts.
