I've got a little bit of rust on the chrome of the license plate light/mount thingy. Can I get this out without replacing the part or doing some major league grinding? Would a wire brush and some elbow grease work?

you got an 84 fj-60, and all you got is rust on the license plate frame????
just kidding.
i've never had luck with pitted chrome, i always acid dipped it and painted it. i thinkk by now you can buy paint that would stick to chrome. use spot putty on the pitted areas, and srpay it.
hammer

Just try Chrome polish and a small brass brush. Unless it is major, you'll be done in 10 minutes.

I knocked off all the rust on my chrome steel rims with some cleaner wax and fine steel wool.

Never tried it on any tail gate chrome though. I'd test a small area first.
