Removal and repair suggestions - Rear diff drain plug (1 Viewer)

Bashed this pretty good. Cannot get socket on the plug. I'd like to retain as much of the protection ring as possible but get clearance for the socket.
All suggestions welcome.

A die grinder (air or electric) with a cone shaped carbide bit would work best.

Then switch out your plug.

Drill a small hole in the center of the plug then use a 1 3/8" hole saw it will remove all you need to use a socket.
X2 for swaping to hallen plug.

Oh man, these are all great solutions! I knew there would be a better replacement plug but was unaware of the Hallen.

Ha, I thought Hallen was a funny name for that plug, until I realized it was a typo.
Allen plug it is!

If you don't have a die grinder, use a cold chisel and hammer and clean up (shave off) the jagged bits around the inside lip of the protection ring. Do this until the socket fits. You may also need to tap the socket in place with a hammer, if it's still mildly hanging up on the ring.

Leave that alone and drain thru bottom stud hole.

Once you get the old plug out get a new plug with a magnetic core in it. Handy dandy doo-dad to monitor wear and tear. Same goes for the engine and tranny drain plugs.
