SO i went and had a look at a 1987 HJ60 the other day, engine had about 450k on it, but it sounded good.

So im wondering what kind of problems does that engine have around that mileage?

Anything i should be looking for specifically? i mean it seemed pretty clean all around, and started on the first go...

Aftermarket turbo viability? is it a good engine to turbo?

thanks in advance

At 450k I would be factoring in a rebuild in the near future. It may go for another 150,it may drop dead tomorrow.
A turbo would probably kill it a bit quicker or maybe a lot quicker.

To get some idea of a diesel engines condition, you really need to see a dead cold start, not one that was warmed up 10 mins before you got there.
If it doesnt start easy and run smoothly from go,get ready for the rebuild or walk away.

damn .. well I would say 2H it's a pretty darn good engine .. I'm pushing mine as hard as I could and still there .. ;)

Comp test it's the best way to know what's going in there ..

Here's my opinion:

I personally would not turbo any engine that was not designed for it.
Though there have been lots of people who have put a turbo on a 2H and are happy with it.
But, factory turbo engines such as the 13BT and the 12HT have much heavier components than their non-turbo counterparts the 3B and 2H.

I own a 1985 HJ60 and wouldn't really recommend it for 21st century traffic. It cannot maintain its speed very well going uphill, and overtaking is near impossible, and it gets up to speed pretty slowly too.
I'd wait for an HJ61, with a factory turbo 12HT.

And as for reliability of the 2H. Some say their lifespan is modest, others say it can go into 7 figures.
But there isn't much concrete evidence either way. Just lots of wishful thinking and hearsay.

End of opinion. :)

My HJ60 is about 360K, never been opened, apart from tappet cover,,, The engines are simple, robust and will drag the Cruiser all over the bush year on end. they dont like hills, so turbo and watch how you drive it, they turbo well and you shouldnt have any concerns
I was lucky , 1 owner from new, serviced every 5K,,,, I believe this is what makes them last

I would not turbo it, it doesn't have a piston skirt oil system.

Mine have 436k kms on it still running strong. Based on the PO maintenance on others parts, my guess it's never been rebuild and don't have any plans to rebuild it..

See a cold start, I've been fooled that way ;) The glow plugs were toasts.

Get used to slow speed and acceleration and I won't turboed.

I've have a few 2H's. Bought one with 300,000 and another with 400,000. We've added nearly 200,000 to both engines with nothing but oil changes.

The higher mileage engine, I turboed at 540,000 and now I have to replace the head gasket at 600,000.

To be honest, I have worked this engine to the max, continuously, doing things that I probably wouldn't have if I knew better at the time.

BUT, the 2H takes a lot of punishment. Best engine I have ever owned.

do a compression test, turbo it, enjoy it is my opinion.

did you end up buying the car? and i bet the motor is still running. a bloody good motor in those landcruisers.

The engine is very reliable. Mine has only 286,000 on it, but its taken me lots of places with no issues. The 24 volts starts that thing up like nothing else I own, literally half a crank sometimes, even in the coldest mountain weather. I'm finally selling mine though...spring hanger broke again and I just don't have time to fix it. :crybaby:

There are no real reliability issues with 2H engines if you are patient.

Well, as Kim said...best engine he’s ever owned...

I dunno man. There are 2h owners who would disagree with you.

When they have problems, like the 3B and other not so powerful N/A diesels, its often because owners over rev them constantly trying to get every last bit of accelleration out of them and eventually it takes its toll on the engine.
And once an engine is 30 years old, who knows how many drivers its had.
I think the 60 series in Australia with 1.4 million klms was a 2H engine. Only ever had a clutch and starter changed. Owner used it for escorting oversized loads on outback highways.

Flat roads, warm conditions, 60-80km/h. That's the easiest life any vehicle ever gets.

guess it depends how " warm " it is .. also, like how much stop and go, and overall maintenance ..

All in all a good engine, not the best, not the worst ..

I think the elderly owner said on his time off he tows a 25ft caravan around Australia with his wife. Even hills/mountains dont make much difference if you want to slow down and use the lower gears

I towed a a very heavy vehicle on my 2H up and down that crows nest road...Princeton. 2nd gear uphill...slow and steady and the temp gauge never moved. She’s a good engine if you know how to treat her.

Cant comment on the design or reliability, but my 2h starts on a quarter turn in minus 20.
I should have went a 5 speed with turbo for 100km/120km roads.
It does 80km with 33's tires sitting on 1900/2000rpm. 0 to 80km no problems at all, all day every day.
2nd gear has some nice pull.

Although i dont have much experience in land cruiser motors, i think the 2h could benefit from a little boost, just a little.
my motor is 460K
