Hello all!

I have a 1990 FJ62 and am getting ready to put on the OME medium kit and 33"s. My A440 has just been rebuilt. I need to rebuild the front axle, and both front and rear diff's because they are worn out/leaking.

While I am in there, I thought I might need to re-gear for the 33's with 4.56's or 4.88's. Truck is a daily driver, and I do use it on the highway so I don't want to run 3,000 rpm at 70. Conversely, I don't want to leave the stock 4:11's and overstress the transmission and bog around town.

So:

1. Do I need 33's with the OME to keep it from looking strange?
2. Will running 4:11's with 33's hurt the drivetrain?
3. Will 4:56's or 4:88's make it terrible on the highway?

I have searched the forum and cannot get any clear data to answer these questions. What do you guys think?

Mike

33's w/OME looks perfect. Stock size will look goofy.
Stock 4.11's are ok if you don't drive too hard, but accelleration won't be great.
Use the gear calculator to look at rpm for the freeway speeds you typically drive. 4.56 will put you at stock, but 4.88 will only be a little higher rpm because the OD on your tranny is super deep.

For what it's worth...

FJ62's have 4.11 third members - most people look for 2X front thirds due to lack of use/wear.

FJ80 & Fzj80 REAR thirds are 4.11 and will work for front and back on a 60 (thirds without the e-lockers IIRC and provisions for c-clip axle retention - SF vs. FF)

I also have a '90 FJ62.and just had to have the A440 transmission rebuilt. I had 35's on it and had to pretty much drive with it floored all the time, but I live in the mountains north of Reno. After I had the transmission rebuilt I put on 31's until I can afford the regear. I am going with 4.88's when I do it along with lockers.

I see you're in Texas. Odds are you're gonna be okay with 4.11's

I have stock gears in my FJ60 with OME and 33's. I do have a manual transmission but I could see on long grades it would get old. Especially at altitude.

It's really your call :)

Maybe find another one to drive and see what you think? I drove a 62 for the first time a few months back. It felt weird. haha

Since gears are expensive, you only want to do it once. I'd do 4.88. Stock tires are like 28 inches. 31 inch tires would suggest 4.56 and 33 inch tires would call for 4.88.

The OME lift is perfect with 33s. Nice stance, nice ride, not sketchy at all.

The "gear ratio" you want is 350. Problem solved.

So true....

Thanks for all the help, I am going to go with 33's and 4.88 gears. Since most of the driving I do is around town, I think this would be the best deal.
