If you really wanted to keep the same doors you could remove the doors, pull the trim, then pull the jamb and cut it down to whatever height you wanted. Then add a spacer at the top of the rough opening, if required, and put it all back together. If your trim is wide enough, it'll cover the extra gap you just created on the top. Otherwise a little drywall work would be in order.

It would have to be one sweet set of doors to convince me to go through all that work. Not to mention the bottom block on those doors is probably nearly gone, and the cut looks like ass.

I don't disagree with you. Notice I said - "If you really...". Perhaps I should have said "If you really ..."

Bona Mega is an awesome product and super easy to use. You really can't go wrong with this stuff. They have great tech support as well.

The nails you can drive in and then use a filler. I blend some filler with fine sawdust cut from the same type of wood to match it better. You won't notice the filler but the nails have got to go. It's really not even that hard to pull some wood from the closet, replace the boards and then get new wood for the closet were you won't notice the mismatched pieces as much.

Replace the doors, reuse the hardware. Few hours max. Got to the lumber yard and get blanks. Use a saw track to cut. Easy to make.

Cut with a sacrificial piece of luan on the bottom to keep from tearing out. Tape both sides of the cut - that helps too and use a new, fine tooth trim blade.

You can rent a hard wood floor sander from Home Depot that is basically 4 or 5 DA (dual action) sanders hooked together with a dust collection sander. Much easier to use for the do it yourselfer that the traditional and hard to learn use floor sanders. Will take longer but hard to mess it up and no sanding marks for going to slow or too fast.

|Dude knows his stuff, exactly what I did short of installing all the fir flooring and stair treats, Bonna Mega is prolly the best product on the market, easy to work with and very easy none toxic water based.

Drill the heads off the nails then punch them down a little. Use putty or plugs from the closet. Plug cutters a pretty cheap and work well.

Honestly I'd just pull the carpet remove the tack strips and adhesive and then just clean the floor and put a big rug down.

Pretty sure I can hook you up with a few nice economical rugs at a hell of a price. I have a few to choose from.;)

I was surprised no one had already suggested this method. Don't drive the nails down until you drill the heads off as the nail head tends to bend the surface fibers resulting in a pretty large hole. Use a center punch to punch the centers, drill out using a bit the same diameter as the nail shaft and then punch them down once the head is off. I would just fill with some wood putty before sanding the floors.

Stay with the hardwood and as others have said, replace the doors.

I say remodel the entire house, replace all damaged boards and refinish the entire place. Then have me up and I will party with you and talk about what a great job you did.....
Sure wish you knew a builder that lived real close. Most of the ones I know are slow, retarded, and live 3 hours south...

get the floors redone. Make sure you use the "alcohol" based floor finish. You will have to move out for a couple of days, but the stuff is hard as those nails you have in your floor. Call this guy. He did all of my floors(whole house is hardwood, and he is awesome.)
