My question is this: Is there any way to get a Toyota Hand Held Tester? I work for Yamaha and we sometimes have restrictions on what tools/parts can be sold to a non-dealer or through a dealer. Just curious if there is any way to get my hands on one of these.

I checked with my dealer on this; u don't want to know the price. I too would like to know if we can get one!

If you get one, you can keep it at my house.

A scan tool is about 4 thousand bucks, how many would you like?

Is that before or after the discount?

Would you throw in a free battery box gasket?

Drexx bought one on eBay a few years ago. Seems a guy won it in some kind of tech school contest and put it up on eBay. As I recall, he grabbed it on a BIN for about $3,000.

Sorry, I need to clean my screen so I can read this thread right...I just blew milk out my nose. I knew that thing wouldn't be cheap...but it does sooo much more than just another scan tool.

So I guess the moral to this question is that "yes" we could get one, but only after our first born is handed over to Dan.

the Toyota/Lexus scann tool is read only for our year ranges correct? no programming or operation of systems can be initiated from the scanner correct?

Raven,
I don't believe the ECU is reprogrammable but I believe the Toyota scan tool can initiate commands like opening and closing the VSV's.

The scan tool has active tests that it can run on the system. So it can activate the VSV and operate several running tests. These are preconfigured into the scan tool.

It will also give you real time temps on the EGR temp. sensor (according to the FSM) as well as let you see several sensors outputs in real time. That alone would save a lot of pin poking diagnostic time.

the sensor data is availabe via OBDII software for a lot less money ($50-$200) but so far I have no seen any software that will allow you to activate parts of the SFI system,
