Anybody have any recom. for this type of work like Jim C does?

I went Bearden automotives and its costing me $133 just to tell me my vacuum adv diaphragm is bad which i already told them and that my distributor needs to be replaced....rip off if you ask me.

Any suggestions would be appreciated since i need to get this rig back on the road asap!

Edwin Kincaid might be able to work on this on his off time. I think Jody as well. Let me see if I can find their emails.

Daniel at Wimberly 4WD did my carb, works great 830-626-3111

kling-on - How much did Wimberly 4wd set you back? And did they adjust it for a desmog or just tune it?

I've contacted Edwin and Jody via email..thanks for their contact davegonz.

I'm surprised to hear this. IMO Jeff Bearden is scrupulously honest and his shop turns out first rate work. They've done work on all 4 of my Cruisers and I've never had a problem. As far as I know, they're the only place in town that will let you bring in your own parts. Jeff has even talked me out of having work done that he thought was unnecessary. I don't have any suggestions for other alternatives in Austin. Grant Simmons at Wimberly Four Wheel Drive is a wizard with Cruiser mechanicals, if you don't mind driving to New Braunfels. If you have an axe to grind with Bearden's shop, I'd suggest that you talk directly to Jeff.

I have talked to Jeff personally and I know first hand he is a good honest mechanic but i just couldn't justify in my mind why i was being charged that amount for telling me my distributor parts/vac. diaphragm needed to be replaced. I also understand that nothing else could be determined before this was fixed first but I'm also pretty sure it didn't take 2.5 hours or an hour for that fact to be diagnosed . He said he'd give me a break on fixing my timing once a replaced rotor/dizzy cap/ sparkplugs vacuum diaphragm but to my understanding from his shop worker that this procedure would have been done initially with the diagnosis charge. I would assume he'd do it w/o charge but that's not what i get from speaking with him.
Again, I'm not doubting his work or ethics but rather my initial result after coughing up a heavy diagnostic fee IMO.

Jim C. also does distributor rebuilds. He rebuilt mine a few years ago and re-curved it for my desmogged engine. I also had to have the vacuum advance unit replaced. I've heard that this part isn't available anymore, so it may be difficult to locate.
