Starting to rebuild the axles and differential on my 71 FJ40. Got everything apart except for removal of the front differential fron the axle housing. The rear was easy in that you can remove the rear cover and then knock the rest apart. The front has me puzzled, tried light hammer taps, it won't break apart....Any tips

    thanks in advance

do you have the front birfields/inner axles out?

If yes, then it's just being stubborn. Put a floor jack under the pinion and apply pressure, carefully...it will crack loose.

The axle and knuckles are all torn down. The axle is not mounted to the frame as I am doing a complete frame up restoration... I guess I'll try a bigger hammer.
