More drag, that's why. That's the tech part. Clamped to the gutter tightly, is that tech? Mods, move this if you see fit. Home made rack made with very little technical expertise or planning. Weld on the fly.

Interesting. I have also observed about the same difference when I have my rack on.

Looks nice by the way...;)

sometimes those are the projects that come out best! :D

nice rack! yes, i feel weird saying that to a guy :flipoff2:

curious, why leave the front open with no rail?

You're being a little too humble - don't worry about the mods. It is a good looking rack (better racks over in chat but this is good for tech).

Thanks Dan, and thanks for the quick ship on the parts!

I liked the look of it but id did weaken the front for load. I didn't plan on putting anything of weight there. I was thinking of one of those tent cots from Cabella's going width wise near the front. I can stand on it (6'2" 235#) but it does flex a bit. Heavy stuff goes against the rear rails.

No one has ever said I have a nice rack, I did have a guy tell me I had a nice ass once.:flipoff2:

Wow, absolutely beautiful shape and nicely tight to the roof as well. Looks like the mounts allow you to also raise it or lower it a bit, eh? Slap a sheet of wood down and you've got a great platform for viewing or sleeping. I see you made absolutely maximal use of length - how long is it?

Lenght is 87.5" OD and 48" wide ID. The rear is about 1" above the roof and the front is about 2". Just enough to open the sun roof in the vent position. As the truck sits a bit lower in the nose it looks ok to have the rack a bit higher in the front. Thanks for the comments.

Looks like some nice work there, photo.

Photo,
I'm in the process of building my 3/4 rack with the bender I made a few weeks ago. Did you make the gutter mounts or buy them? If the later, who's are they? Your design is basically what I had in mind for a while. Have you notice a lot more wind noise? I just got back from a weekend scout campout and am definitly needing to get this rack finished up.

DID you make the rack yourself or is something others can duplicate???

Yes and yes. I made it myself and it is easily duplicated. I bought some surplus 1" tempered 16 ga tube in 10' length and had 3" radius bends done so there would be 4' ID then welded two together with a length between to give me the total length of the rack. The floor slats are 1/2" bt 1.5" rectangle tube cut to length as well as the cross slats that the feet are bolted to. The vertical slats are the same material cut to length and welded to the top tube. I had to make the bends in the top tube that meet the bottom tube with a conduit bender and welded those pieces to the top tube. It looks good at ten feet but I will admit that it looks home made up close. I'm rather anal though. As I said earlier. I don't draw plans, I think it out in my head and go for it.

I don't like it, take it off and I'll come get it and dispose of it for you.

Seriously, I like it better than any I've seen. It would be perfect for my needs.

With your fab skills it would be a snap.

There are two good makers of these types of mounts. I bought them from the old Con-Ferr which is no longer. They are now Offroad Unlimited. www.offroadunlimited.com. I didn't see the gutter mounts on the ORU sight.

http://www.con-ferr.com/

The item number is HDS-1 and there are eight on my rack.
They are currently listed for $20.52 ea. they are charging more for them than the web sight lists but I made noise about the advertised price and they gave me the web price, $169.00 shipped. Which sucks because that is almost twice the price I payed for the raw steel.

Spector off road has some nice ones that I used on my last rack build but I don't think they are as sturdy and they only have one bolt hole for support.

The wind noise is a bit more but it comes with the territory.

Nice looking but doesn't look heavy enough for me. I don't like the idea of light weight pressed steel for major support arias. I do like ARB stuff though and I'm sure it works great as all their stuff does.
