After another weekend of fixing things on my new FJ80 (1991) I am stumped once again. The left turn signal started clicking twice as fast as the right, which usually means a bulb is dead. Well I replace the bulb and no change, so now I'm stumped. I did some searching and read that the flasher might be the cause. Where is it? The problem started intermittently only happening once in a while, but now it seems it is here to stay.

Thanks

Wish this had a solution, @Pippylongsausage ; did you ever find your solution to this?

I am having the same issue, this comes up in the search, so I would like to piggyback on this instead of creating a new one. Right turn signal is in rapid blink mode. Driver-F/R and Passenger-F work fine in turn and hazard, Passenger-Rear is getting no power. Bulb is fine, all the fuses are fine, and clearly the rest of the system is working. This happens every time I drive on washboard roads, so the connection somewhere is getting lost. I took off the rear side panels and jiggled every wire I could touch; no difference.

First, not sure if there is any difference in the wiring paths for 91/92 and 93-97s; both myself and the OP have FJ80s. Where does the wiring for the system split in the vehicle? The easiest solution is to trace the wire from the plug to the split and figure out where the break is along the way. Anyone know know where the wiring for the rear splits from the front signals?

I have a 91, and had the same issue. In my case I lost the ground on that outlet, put 6" piece of 12 gauge wire as new ground, and problem solved!

I had the same thing happen but I replaced my tail light bulbs with LEDs. LEDs unfortunately mess with the cruise control but I don't get pulled over anymore because they work again. The cruise control issue is fixable.

I tried putting a separate ground to the circuit, there is no +12V to the socket. So, unfortunately that didn't solve the issue.

Not sure if this will solve your problem, but it worked for me. if you have a hitch with a wiring harness, trace it back to the turn signal. Mine had a short from years of rubbing on the hitch. Good luck.

I think this might be the crux of the issue. The PO poorly spliced in the trailer wiring with scotchlocks. I removed them and have an unfinished project of cutting out the '92 pigtails, and swapping with a 93+; then adding a Hopkins I have. I jiggled around the wiring harness on the driver's side thinking it was an uninsulated part of the wire grounding out. Maybe it has completely broken off.

This didn't get much traction as a common issue, so I will dive into this project and see if I can find a solution.

It is called the Hoppy, it is in the left rear panel it is a little black box that seperates the brake and bliker for a trailer pig tail

Was this issue solved? I am having the same issue and try to chase down the gremlin. If the issue is the hoppy whats the fix? Cut out and splice in a new one?

This

Exactly what happened to mine. I ended up pulling out all the hitch wiring and reconnecting the the oem wires. Was a pain but fixed in a couple hours.

I used good waterproof connectors and shrink wrap for all the wires. Same stuff I've used on dirt bikes and dual sports for years and they get soaked all the time.

New to the forum and cruiser ownership, but have used it so many times to solve issues on the 80 - thanks! Thought I'd try to return the favour and post my experience in case it helps someone in the future.

My FZJ80's rear indicators/turn signals stopped working intermittently, both the standard taillight housing bulbs and LEDs on the aftermarket rear bar. RHS at first but then occasionally LHS. Following advice in a few threads here I checked the bulbs, fuses, flasher relay, hazard switch (had recently removed the dash to replace radio so could have been loose when replaced), cleaned/checked the earth points in the passenger and driver's footwells (behind plastic kick panels that run back along the sill) and under the tailgate as well as checking the trailer hitch wiring and earth - with no luck.

Cracked out the wiring diagram (first time for me), and worked from behind the front turn signals backwards given everything at the front was working fine. Got lucky and after disconnecting the first harness connection point in the LHS footwell (labelled ID2 in the screengrab below) and testing the turn signal pins (20 and 21) with a multimeter (positive probe to the pin on the male side of the connector, negative to earth, beepy continuity setting) to confirm they were working with the respective indicators switched on, popped the connector back together and bingo everything works fine. Must have come loose over some rough roads - hate to think what else was not getting a good connection.

For anyone interested that is the connector labelled ID2 in the wiring manual located in the LHS footwell. Big flat 22 pin connector near the firewall. If that hadn't worked I would have continued backwards to the BQ1 connector and so on until the beeps stopped. Hope that helps, took me 3 days to work out - I'm no bush mechanic that's for sure.
