Just wondering how difficult it is to find and how much they cost and the ease of installation for the rear mount spare on a HDJ81 that doesnt have one.

Search under OEM tire carrier and you will find plenty.

Is this what your after?

I don't know if thats what it looks like

Is that what attaches the wheel to the rear door?

The truck I'm looking at doesnt come with one, but it's a pretty important item for me. Do all HDJ81's have the holes ready for a mount? I'm not sure if the truck originally came with one or not.

You're talking about the ones that attach to the D pillar, wont work for your US model unless you custom make the internal mounting bracket, or source the OZ/JDM/Euro internal bracket.

If my truck had not come with one I would have just went with an aftermarket bumper that had a rear tire carrier option. Sourcing everything that you need is not going to be cheap, easy nor quick.

I agree.. you're talking three figures for the parts, and a lot of work to install (or fab) the supports. Plus cutting the body which is never fun.

For not too much more you can go with an aftermarket carrier that will better support much more weight than the OEM.

I don't know anything about them but there is a company on eBay Austraila that sells rear tire carriers that look like this. They claim the support and captured nuts are all already there.

Seems reasonable....how many variations does Mr. Toyota want to make on the basic body structure - not many I'd bet.

So has any US guy here bought one of these and can tell us from personal experience the D pillar doesn't have the internal structure?

I'm all for buying a Slee rear bumper, but I need to fill the hole in my ARB first, and I could swing one of these if they aren't more than ~$200.

It goes without saying that spanky license plate holder would be cool too.

A friend of mine actually got the parts and had it installed. I doubt it was a good thing to do, but I'll have to wait a few years to see what happens.

Re-inforcement was in two peices as they couldn't fit it as one, and they were welded in. The D pillar was cut to get the reinforcement in. They sprayed the inside of the D pillar with anti rust. The rest was relatively simple assembly.

It's unfortunate that I couldn't ask him to remove his panels just to satisfy my curiosity. On the outside it looked OEM but I think I'd not have done the operation if my 80 also did not originally come with one.

The US spec 80s do not have the support structure in the D-pillar. CruiserDan or Mot can get you the license plate holder. Dan has one on his truck and he installed mine. We posted pics of the install about 3 or 4 years ago. Not bad, just some drilling in the tailgate. Wiring is already there.
