Rear sill on mine is shot... obviously.
Looking at buying one, and if I do I obviously would like all holes drilled and set. Any suggestions on who/where would be best built for the money??

I have what I think is a... 78 tub, no grommetts on sill for body mounts, round tube tire carrier, ambulance doors.

Also just a curiousity question... (Thinking ahead here)
Is there a bolt on 5 speed tranny that is simply applied. Looking to keep original front and rear so would like a simple Tranny if there is one anyone knows of.

I Will keep the old...cause its original. Not too many mountains here so mostly road and beach use for this 40... so don't really need the limitations from the low crawling original 4 speed??

Suggestions appreciated. Might leave it if not worth changing....

Thanks in advance, for sharing your wisdom and experience.

My rear sill and corner channels came from CCOT. Perfect fit, pre-drilled and threaded holes. Here's a pic...

Toyota's H-55 5 speed tranny is pretty much a plug and play replacement, but I don't think the gear ratios are significantly different from the H-42. You just pick up an overdrive 5th gear.

You can get an H55f and a split case for about $3500, but no e-brake. You're going to have to fab a rear x-member and new drive shafts. Your four speed doesn't have that low of gears. 1st is 3.55:1. An h55f is 4.8:1 and has an overdrive. It's a huge upgrade, but the costs and work make it a tough sell if you're mostly happy with what you have. Bigger tires are a cheap way to get some overdrive.

No question on the rear sill. Awl_teq does the best metal work I've ever seen.

X2 Fast Eddy. Just ordered my rear sill and frame crossmember from him after lots of research... Should be here from Canada soon...

Both option shown are the correct way to do it. To many times you see someone just put a piece of C channel in the middle and then weld new quarter panels to it. The C channel should wrap around the corners to help the support the wheels wells. Up thru 78 ther is a exposed weld in line with with rear edge of the rear doors. On the 79 and up the rear quarter extended in a couple of inches to be inline with the piece that rolls in the door frame. The original OEM piece was offset to then when the quarter panel laid over it it was flush with the middle of the rear sill. Don't believe anyone makes one like that. The first thing I look at when inspecting a 40 series. Probably the most common rust spot on the FJ40 and pretty easy to tell if it's original or a repair by the weld and laying flush.

Thanks again you all... PM'ed Awl_teq. Hopefully the resolution is there.

@ Fast Eddy - Thanks for the heads up... those are the type things I need to know. My inexperience will continue to show through. This site has been awesome already. and I only had a few simple questions, not sure what to do when things get rough.

Very appreciative on this side.....
