I need to replace my rear main seal. it is starting to leak really bad. Is there anybody out there that knows of a decent mechanic or does side work as mechanic in the Southern California area?

You can try Yotamasters in Corona, good people and a lot of experience with Toyota's. They just did a birf job for me and I was very happy with the work. They even painted all the exposed parts and everything looks brand new now.

Highly likely that the leak is not your rear main seal, but the rear arch area of the main oil pan, which means the transmission doesn't have to come out, just drop both oil pans and reseal using FIPG (Form In Place Gasket material).

Look up Alex Mejias in Riverside - may be in the white pages. I don't know if he's still working, but he's been our family mechanic for 30 years and is solely responsible for the origination of my love for land cruisers.

I live in SC now...

I have been to YotaMasters a few times but i don't think they do any major engine work. I'll call Eric and ask

Good point. I'll check the oil pan this weekend.

another vote for Yotamasters - happy customer here!
I've also heard very good things about topline performance in huntington beach.

Here's a link to a photo of the rear main seal (reddish brown rubber) and the rear arch area of the main oil pan where it mates to the block. The block is above the line where the black FIPG is oozing out, main oil pan below:
