I need to replace my rear heater motor in my 1975 fj40. The one I have is not repairable per the local armature repair shop. Before I but a 40 year old used OEM I thought I would see if there is an aftermarket motor that might be an improvement over the original. I looked around a bit and don't see any the same size.

I bet yours is repairable. Hard to improve on the original.. This one from my 69 was totally corroded and frozen. Took it apart and cleaned/lubed it

Once upon a time I had similar issues with the rear heater motor. After a futile search for a replacement, I had mine repaired by a journeyman electrician in the 90s. He meticulously cleaned, lubed and rewound everything. That same motor still works great even 20+ years later. Find a shop that rebuilds starters and alternators, I bet they can help if you don't want to try it yourself.

Unfortunately that's not a job for your modern electrician. Or even an average old school electrician. It's one of those specialized skills.

I'm probably an above average electrician and it's realistically beyond my skills set.

I was hoping I could have it repaired but when I went to the alternator amd starter shop he refered me to the Armature specialist. They checked it out and said it was beyond repair.

Probably some 20 yrs ago my motor stopped working - open winding's. Having never before rewound a rotor on anything I took it apart measured the magnetic wire diameter, payed attention to winding direction and number or loops. Ordered a small spool from ebay and rewound it myself. Still working today.
Have some fun and give it a try what will you be out if it doesn't work? A little time or some worthless cash.
At a minimum you will gain some knowledge.
New bushings and brushes are in order too.
Hard not to just buy one and just be done though.

So you have a 75 FJ40, but you've ordered a motor described as being for '81 and later. Planning some customization or is motor a direct fit for '81 and earlier also?

That is a good question. 40 series with bucket seats this is the center console and heater that fits under it.

I pulled a rear heater out of an 84 HJ47RV that had a bench seat. That look closer to the 8/80+ heater under the center console that older style.

Thought someone had a thread on a cheap generic heater they used in a rear heater.

Plan to do some modification. Looks like the same size motor so I'm hopeful it will work. I'll follow up and let you know.
