Yesterday afternoon marked my second time getting rear ended in the 80. This one was a little worse. I was southbound on the GW Pkwy near the airport. After cruising at about 45 I saw brake lights and came to a complete stop behind the car in front of me. Felt like the guy behind me hadn't been able to slow down at all. Pushed me into the car in front of me.

I'm going to set up an appointment with a State Farm (his insurer) adjuster today. Anything hidden that I should make sure they look for?

The rear cross member is pushed in by a couple inches, there's a dent in the tailgate door, and a plastic trim piece is halfway off. Don't know about the spare as it looks like the cross member was pushed into it a bit.

My other question is. . . assuming I get a fair estimate and they cut me a check w/o hassle, which aftermarket rear bumper do you recommend? I know the 4x4Labs bumper replaces the rear cross member, which I need to do anyway. Is there another bumper on the market that requires the same removal of the cross member?

Here are some pics:

I like the slee bumper, but I don't know about the rear cross member. I would guess just about all of them would require that you remove it. I had to remove it for the arb on the 62.

Take a close look at the rear body mounts. The crossmember being pushed in in the center will bow the frame ends inward as well. Also look closely at all the door gaps to make sure nothing buckled. Third gen 4runners were bad for bowing the 1/4 panels out on a rear end hit, 80's may do the same. A little work with a 10 ton porta ram was usually good for tweaking 4runner bodies back into shape.

Thanks, Ryan. That's pretty helpful.

Steve, I get the impression that most of the rear 80 bumpers are designed to attach to the rear cross member rather than take its place. Then again, I don't know too much.

IIRC there is a gap beween the rear bumper piece and the crossmember. It my just be cosmetic considering it didnt't damage your tailgate more. Iron Pig has a nice rear bumperand they are just down the road in Fredericksburg.

If you got pushed into the car in front, are you getting a new front bumper as well?

That's a good question! Either way, there might be enough dough for one of those too...;)

And then mention how the collision must have blew those fender flares off too!

IPOR's and the Slee rear bumper attach with the cross member intact. I'd send the pics down to Cam and Lance and see if they'd be able to fix it enough to get their bumper over it.

Unfortunately, no damage to the front. The estimator comes out on Tuesday, so we'll see how it goes.

Good call on seeing if IPOR can work with it enough to make their bumper work. I'll get ahold of them after I know what I'm working with.

Are you sure?

No damage to the front....I'd check it again to make sure that front bumper is still safe. Maybe dynamically test it for strength, just to be sure (wink, wink):grinpimp:

Thought I'd give y'all an update on the 80. I picked it up from Iron Pig this week, and I couldn't be happier with the work.

New suspension: OME heavies in back, Js in front, L shocks, bump stop and sway bar drops

Instead of the rear bumper, I had them build a set of sliders.

And here's the new cross member.

Thanks very much to Cam, Vince, Nathan and everyone else at the shop.

Looks good.
Now your ready to wheel it.

Sent from the technology that is running our lives!

Nice but you should find out who swiped your tow hitch while you weren't looking! :p Looks like you just rattle canned them which is what I did with mine they did for me. Within 2 weeks the leading end behind the front wheels were completely sand blasted down to metal. I got the $20 starter kit of POR15 which is just enough for both sides, including all the welds, then used a light-duty spray on bed liner to cover it all up.
