I have been asked to post this up by my buddy, the #2 parts on MUD everyone knows as Beno.

I had given this a fleeting thought quite some time ago and never pursued it because it wasn't holding me back on the trails I was running. Finally after two plus years of getting hung up on my lower rear control arm forward mounts I had to do something. I searched MUD an found no mention of what I was looking for, heck I was surprised not to see something similar on Shortbus or some of the other more extensively built 80's. At any rate what I came up with is a ramp/slider which substantially decreases the approach angle on the front side of the rear lower control arm forward mount. My initial design years ago was this crude drawing and used .25" plate with a fitted webbing to provide strength:

After this past season of wheeling of getting hung up repeatedly it was time to correct the nagging issue before Disney, OK, South Dakota and the rest of the season. While at the steel lot I found a cut-off of 1.5"x1.5"x.25" box tubing which I figured would more than adequately fit the bill for such a heavy truck. What I ended up with is what you see below. As luck would have it the length I went with once cut to fit nearly matches the same angle as my lower control arms (bonus) making for a smooth transition from frame to control arm. An added bonus which I hadn't paid any attention to while burning these on was that these sliders hang below the drive shaft and may provide some added protection when playing on ledges.

I you have access to a welder and a grinder this might be something to consider if you wheel your rig in the rocks and such. For a half day or less of puttering in the garage it'll be worth it.

I just did the same thing, although not quite as long and mine is 1/4" plate with a reinforcement to the frame instead of tube. But same idea :D. I like your design, it keeps the angle the same as the LCA itself.

Those rear mounts are the worst hang up point on the rig and they get beat to death, I'm kind of surprised this isn't a common mod.

Can't believe you beat me to it, here are mine (of course, I also cut and lengthened my Slee Gen I LCA's to correct pinion angle and restore wheelbase, so I'll at least have something original to post :grinpimp:)

nice. How is the angle iron on the LCA holding up?

Nice job Kris.

Thank you sir. I first thought about this when the three of us wheeled Wampum a few years back. Ahhh the good old days.

Not very well given how hard I beat on them. They'll soon be replaced with .25" wall tubing so I can correct the pinion angle at the same time.

You got the right idea though. Great minds think alike? There's nothing saying you can't replace them with a longer piece of flat stock. I say beat on them and keep us posted. You'll certainly be wheeling more than I this year that much I can guarantee.

Never been hung up on them, but my rear arm mounts do look like they've been thru the meat grinder. Might be a new mod for me. Thanks.

This may be something in my future...good mod. To Nay, how much did you lengthen the lca's to return pinion angle?

Chris,
These aren't as cool as your crawl box but it may help if/when you're on Rock Creek.

They won't help the OEM control arms from bending but they may help on the trail in the future.

Upon completion did you coat them with grease for lubrication?:hhmm:

Nope, just some black paint I had laying around. With the weight of the 80 I don't know that grease would help plus the environmental impact wouldn't be very nice.

Thats OK, mine aren't OEM anyway. Slee old style tube ones.

It ended up being a hair under 3/8". It looks good that way, my arms are now 2" OD, 3/8 wall with tube in the middle reinforcing where they were cut.

Here is what a perfectly good 1/4" wall Slee arm looks like when you cut it in half and then sleeve it :D

Nay, that is very nice. If i ever bend my angle iron treated stockers ill try that technique

^ Screw that. Get an 80 and never look back.

Oh don't worry, my Cruiser went right over that hump. My buddy on the other hand kept high centering the damn thing or catching that leaf mount. It took my Dad & I three tries to direct him over the hump. JUST no Flex up front on those damn Rados....
