Got r done!

Real learning experience - did have to call my Lexus mechanic friend to figure out how to loosen the e-brake. Once that was done, the old rotor slid right off. No 8mm bolts to push the rotor out needed.

I f'd up the the first try at rotor removal and stretched out the pin holding the front e-brake shoe. That's when the call was placed to my friend. We used a vice and pliers to get the pin back in shape, as it was a special order item at local dealer, and then reassembled that part of the e-brake. Second side went much easier - read once I knew how to loosen the e-brake (I know Dan - you said I might have to back it off some - I just didn't know how! but I do now) . Damn did I learn alot this afternoon. Buddy said he usually removed filter in brake fluid reservoir to drain at least the fluid in there and replace with new. He said kept cycling in some fresh fluid. Old fluid was pretty dark for supposedly being flushed and replaced with 30k service done 7k ago. Another dealer Hmmmm.....?

Old rotors were at 17mm, with 16mm being minimum spec. Don't know what dealer was thinking saying they were just going to turn them. Ploy to get the rotors off, fake turning them and calling to say they were at minimum after being turned and needed to be replaced in all likelyhood. Hmmmm.........

Anyway - DONE and a great learning experience. Thanks Dan and all! Much appreciated!!! :bounce:

Was there anything wrong with the rotors? 17mm is only halfway to worn out, presuming the specs are the same for '94 as a '97.

Probably not. The brake fluid gets dark quickly. Flushing was a good move on your part.

By George, I think you're ready to teach the Auto Mechanics merit badge to some of your older scouts! :bounce:

Minimum on the '94 is 16mm per FSM, max 24mm IIRC. They were the original rotors with almost 157K on them and service said they were slightly concave on inspection and needed turning. Turning would have probably taken them to minimum, so I figured it was just as easy (yea right!) to change them while doing the rear pads. I should be good for another 157K now! :D

Thanks for the confirmation on fluid getting dark quickly B. Didn't completely flush, just removed what fluid was in the reservoir and replaced that.

FYI, the spec in my service manual for a '97 is that the rear disk standard (new) thickness is 18mm, with 16mm being the minimum. So 2mm is the allowable wear.

Spec for front disk is 32mm standard, 30mm minimum, again 2mm wear being allowed.

Good to hear you got it done without much in the way of hassles. :D

If it was too easy, you might've gotten a little too confident ;)

He almost certainly could have gone longer before changing them but as he said he's good for another 150 at least and it took him 12 years the first time. By then he might be tired of the vehicle anyway.....:)

Doug - confident when it comes to auto mechanics? I highly doubt I'll ever get to that point. I'm more like :whoops: when it comes to auto mechanics.

Dan - only thing that will get me tired of it is if gas prices hit $5/gallon! I think a lot of us might get 'tired' at that point! At least I know how to adjust the -ebrake now. :D
