Rear bearing cap shim/gasket?

Hi,

I'm replacing the rear seal on my 11/ 72 FJ40 and in-between the block and the bearing cap is what I'm assuming is a shim (see pic). Can someone confirm? When I put this back together, should I use any sealant (e.g. ultra black) on either or both sides of the shims or just clean them up and reuse without any sealant. They didn't appear to have any sealant on them from the factory.

Also, based on my Haynes manual, the torque specification for the rear main bearing cap bolts is 85 f/lb. Let me know if anyone recommends otherwise.

Thanks,
Brian

In my original post I referred to the metal plates as gaskets, but after doing more reading, I'm thinking these are shims. I'm definitely planning to reinstall them as it would otherwise change the tolerance, but should I reinstall without any sealant (just clean up and install) or should I use a sealant on both sides of the shims (e.g. ultra black or other).

thanks,
Brian

I do not see in the FSM for the early F engine anyplace where it states to put sealant on or around the rear main cap as it does for the 2F engine.

Run the shim(s) without sealant is what I would do.
