Rebuilt my rear axle hubs over the weekend for the second time. Made me think of a couple questions. Maybe dumb questions.

First, what is the purpose of filling the hub with grease? Is this to ensure the bearings remain greased? I get the front with the biff in there.

Second, maybe I just missing something, the axles and the wheel bolt to the hub but what holds the hub in place? Seems like the hub and axle could come off as a ....NEVERMIND this bit just realized spindle is threaded and keyed. Lock washer holds it in place.

So what about the first question?

The grease gets warm and it flows. The hub grease ensures there is excess available to keep the bearings lubricated.

the grease is for the wheel bearings. some on here skip running the inner axle seals and just use the gear oil as lube for the bearings

Thanks, sort of what I thought. When I opened them up over the weekend they looked just like I left them the last time I rebuilt them.

Most full floaters have no grease most run in gear oil with no problems
