Last year my AC compressor bit the dust in my 1991 FJ80. I replaced with a new compressor from cruiserparts.net that came pre-oiled with R-134. I also replaced the receiver/drier and charged the system with R134.

Front air blows cold, rear air blows outdoor temp. My haynes manual for this model is NOT very specific with no diagrams of the rear air system. Is the rear air on a separate system or am I missing something else?

TIA for any suggestions.

Well,

This is a dicey one as you do not have rear A/C to begin with. :-\

Rear AC unit is in the rear quarter panel on the right side "IF" your 80 came with one (as Dan said in the US it was not available in the 80). :'(

Also another way to confirm is to see if there are vents and a switch on the sealing(?) behind the driver/passenger (1st row) seats.

I have thought about both retrofitting a rear ac unit, plumbing, switches, etc... but also thinking about picking up four, small fans and clip them facing rearward under headrests for 2nd and 3rd row passengers.

Good luck staying cool! 8)

I slide my windows back rather than forward for improved cold airflow.

dekuiper,
If you're talking about the blower under the right front seat, that is for the rear heater. All US spec 80's came standard with rear heat but no US spec 80 series were available with rear A/C.

OK - Now I'm feeling ignorant. It is not under the front seat and there are no switches in the ceiling. I am referring to a blower in the bottom rear of the center console. I know it blows heat, but I would swear (so would my wife) that the first few years we owned it, that blew COLD air also. I am sure of it - I distinctly remember the kids saying; "turn off the air its too cold back here!"

Maybe a PO retrofitted something? I know this model 80 was only made for a few years and Haynes has not documented it well. That's why I'm here.

Thanks for your input.

Definitely not factory. Don't know how the PO woul have done it, I haven't looked under the console but would imagine that with the heater core under there, there is no room for a AC coil (is that what it's called?)

The Factory Service Manual can be ordered from CruiserDan for a reasonable sum, and is a valuable resource. I just got mine a few months ago, it is huge and seems to cover everything.

Maybe all these years you didn't realize that you had the center console cool/ice box (not available in US) and it's had a hole cut out at the bottom/rear for the cold air to escape into the cabin, making your kids feel the chill! ::) ;)

You would have to add a second condenser, fan, lines and way to much work to make it worth it.
My question to you is that you said you just installed a compressor that was pre oiled right? The compressors come with enough oil for the entire system, where as the system will already have oil in it from the old compressor. The correct way to install it is take the old compressor off, drain the oil out of the old one and measure it. Then you drain the new oil and only add back the equivelent to what you measured. Add a few more cc's for a new reciever/dryer and your golden. To much oil will result in increased compressor temps, higher high side pressures and insuficient cooling. Ultimately reducing your new compressors life!!
Also, when you removed the old compressor was the old oil black? If so not good. We call that black death, it happens when a compressor lets go and eats up the metal inside itself. The black is aluminum that contaminates the entire system especially the expansion valve that is really easily blocked.

Maybe it's the rear heater that doesn't work and you remember it blowing cold air in the winter? :-\ :flipoff2:

Maybe all the time you two were in the back seat, the coldness wasn't from the ac? :D

Sorry dude, but you don't have ac back there.

The heater assembly is under the RH front seat and a duct leads from there to the bottom of the center console. The fan is controlled by a two speed rocker switch in the dash labeled as "Rear Heat"

Easy to check if there has been mods made under the console, just remove it. Takes all of 5 mins. Empty rear console. 3 bolts or so. Loosen front one - 4 screws or so. Remove rear. You can see all the hardware under there.

No AC for you!

Factory rear A/C and a center console ice box!! I didnt know that non US models had that option .... makes a guy real :'(

Thanks guys, now I have more stuff to whine about not having ;)

Rick was picking on him so he lurks and doesn't post. (Or was that me?)
