ok yep - was the dust shield/backing plate. I pushed against it with the head of my hammer and it bent it back enough to stop the noise. Very relieved, thanks for that tip!

Cool! It really took me by surprise. The clearance between the dust shield/plate and the disc is apparently two hairs and a whisker.ok yep - was the dust shield/backing plate.
