From what I gather, my brother (also on Mud) broke an axle shaft and/or birfield in Moab today going up the `pickle' in his 80. Since it's EJ right now, there are a few folks out there and he said that there was another 80 that was rolled and probably have to be towed home.

If you are the the roll-victim 1) we hope everyone's okay, and 2) would you be willing to lend your birfield/shaft to him until he can get home and he'll compensate and send it back to you?

Please contact him in Moab if you can help 970 946 4935, and please feel free to give him a hard time about having no spares.

Thanks,

just tell him to yank the axle and birf, stick a rag in there, engage the cdl and drive the sucker home.

oops, and better t drop the drive shaft too.

if he doesn't have a cdl switch there is an emergency way to do it by jumping the harness but i'd have to search to find it. also, he can run in 4-lo

bummer. sounds like the tow rope will get a work out. hopefully he has a rear locker...

What year is his vehicle? You will need to know in order to make sure the drive flange will work. I would get the inner, outer and drive flange. That way it will all mate. If he's locked F & R I bet he could make it out in 3wheel drive.

Pull the inner and outer, stuff a rag in the end of the axle housing to keep the oil in the diff, put the drive flange and the dust cap back on and drive it out to the trailhead. Pull the front drive shaft when you get past the bad stuff. You can lock the front and power the remaining wheel.

1992 FJ80, yeah, he's locked F&R. Just got a call from him and he made Waterfall/Pickle/Squeeze without issue; that kid'll do anything with his 80

I'll relay the message about 3 wheel drive, I didn't even consider it.

With some minor trimming to the connector, the hazard switch can be used as a CDL.

He has a factory fitted CDL switch in his 92. In later vehicles that have not been retro-fitted the procedure used to lock the center and be able to keep it locked in high range is as follows:

Shift into low range to lock the center. Once the center is locked shut the vehicle down and crawl under it and un-plug the low 4 position switch on the transfer case. Re-start and shift into high range. The center will stay locked because it thinks the transfer is still in low range due to the fact that you have interrupted the signal to tell it otherwise.

You can also shift into low range, pull the fuse, then shft back into high range.

Fun trail huh? I've got a few bumps and scrapes from that one myself.

Good luck on the parts. :)

You might PM Jon B (jonb96150). I know he's at Moab in an 80 right now, and I think he's checking email. Hope everyone's okay. Heather
