Hello all,

Luckily the truck is in a friend of mines driveway, and I have the day off .. I mean, not what I wanted to spend the day doing, but whatever ...

The problem first occurred a couple of months ago, when I went to start it, and heard a relay click, and then nothing (no power at all, no lights, no locks, nothing!) i fumbled around with it for a day or so, started disconnecting harnesses, going through wiring, relays, and fuses, and finally disconnected my IPF light harness, along with the Slee upgrade, and she started fine ... So I re-connected both, and it didn't work again, next I unplugged just the IPF harness, and it worked ... Since then I removed that harness, and bought the Slee aux. light harness to plug into my upgrade harness ...

All was good until last night ... I turned my lights on first, then went to crank, and heard a relay click, and bam, nothing ... NO POWER AT ALL !!!!

I jumped the truck just in case it was a bad Optima, but no go ...

I unplugged all the lights and harnesses, and nothing ...

I said screw it, and came back today, and I HAD POWER ... Everything worked with the key in ACC and ON, but when I went to crank, it did the same thing, click, NOTHING ...

The thing is, after 5-10 minutes, I get power back, but when I try and start, it does the same thing ...

I've been reading all morning on the site, troubleshooting different things, and can't find anything .. I'm sure its a corroded wire or bad relay, but I really need a starting point and some pointers ...

Daily Driver, so I need the truck tomorrow ...

Thank you so much in advance,

-Joshua

check the plug on top of the starter...try unplugging it and then re plugging it in...

trying that now ... I pulled the bolted connection off, and there is corrosion, but I dont think enough to do anything, and pulled the plug, and that looks clean ...

Anything I try ....

I have the laptop next to the truck, I can try things as they are yelled out

Nope ... It is not a starter or motor type issue ... It is pure electrical ...

Actually now, I can get the radio playing (when the power comes back) but if I add something, like the fan ... Everything cuts off ....

I NEED HELP !!!!!

Thanks,

-Joshua

Fusible links partially fried? Battery terminals loose or dirty? Check all fuses? Dead cell in a battery? (swap in a different one). Some ideas for you to look at.

Have you checked out the starting troubleshooting thread in the FAQ?

Efi relay under hood check for one discolored lead. MIke

Ok ... So I removed the battery and tray, unbolted the fuse block, flipped it over and started removing the tape and stuff around all the wires .... I decided to try and temp. install the battery, and she fired right up ...

That pretty much tells me that it's a wire, correct? I can't find one that's corroded now though ...

hmmm......

have you checked the condition of the batt main cables and their terminals at each end? internal corrosion in them?

yeah, i did... well, they are all new anyhow ... But, I couldn't find any corrosion on anything really ... When I peeled the tape and sheilding stuff off, they all looked brand new ,,,,

Still running thought, and I'm just going wire by wire ....

double check your ground from the battery to the engine...also just caus ethey look new dosent mean they aren't bad in the middle..

I was dealing with something similar with an old toyota years ago..ended up changing all the battery cables..

Ok ... I have cleaned every connection point, an re-taped everything back up nice an neat ... I have everything back together, and drove home ... Hopefully no problems arise ...

I am not sure what the solution to this was, but I will go and buy some relay's and stuff to replace with just case, maybe I fixed a loose wire by rummaging ...

x2 make sure you have power before screwing with the wiring. Sounds like it could be a shorted cell.

Actually you had high resistance. When you went to crank the engine the battery sent the amps needed but could maintain because the voltage required was too great. After a few minutes the battery recovered and you had power again. This can be caused by grime covering the battery terminals, grime covering where the battery cable attaches to the starter, bad engine ground strap, or high resistance in the battery cables themselves. Something you may want to consider getting the wiring diagram and cleaning all ground points on the truck.

Makes total sense to me ... Just hopefully I found the messed up wire ...

Now, I still might think it's that relay (EFI Main) or does a relay just, work or not work?
