My air conditioner has a short in the compressor. It's in the shop right now and the mechanic said he is getting 12 volts at the compressor, is this right for a 24 volt system.
Real time help needed Air Con.

12v on the compressor clutch sounds like a poor connection, not a short. What happens to the system when you jumper from a full 24v source to the clutch? Workie or no workie?

Rick,
It turned out to be the clutch had an internal short, mechanic thinks its due to the bearing going out. Both are being replaced today. So to answer my own question, yes it should be 24 volt. Tomorrow I will find something else to work on

Your mechanic's "cause and effects" diagnosis is suspect, but if you authorized the work, then.....
Let us know if there's any surprise after replacing the bearing and clutch coil.
