Due to an unfortunate accident with a pair of channel locks, I need to remove the heater core. Can anyone tell me what is involved. This is not well covered in the FSM-I can't even find an exploded pic of the dash that includes the heater. I will need to replace the inlet or outlet pipe at a minimum and possibly need a new heater core. By the way-this is a 1984 FJ60. Thanks

Update-I think I only need to access the brass pipes that go through the firewall-one of them is crushed. The heater core looks separate on the scematic on SOR's web page. Does that mean I need to remove the entire dash? Thanks if you can help.

I have a feeling the brass pipes are part of the core :(

never done one but did a few cars............almost without exception the dash has to come out/off :(

but I will wonder out to my 60 and look............

I can't tell by looking but this dawned on me............I replaced every single hose on my 60............there was no hose behind the dash, almost sure it just wasn't over looked and that the pipes are part of the core, it would make little sense to have hoses behind the dash(like a 40) on a 60.

Thanks John. I'm pretty sure there is a pipe behind the dash with a short connection to the core. Obviously without a good drawing it's hard to say. Here is what I did-battlefield engineering at it's best. Since there was 1 inch or so of pipe sticking through the firewall, I used a pair of needle nose pliers to make it semi-round. Then I pounded in a tapered socket to make it sort of round again. I put the new hose on it and put the clamp about 1 mm away from the firewall and tightened the clamp to gorilla tight. On the initial run at idle it seems to be holding without a leak. We will see. Taking out that dash looks like a big job that I would like to avoid if possible. It's all C-Dan's fault. He sent me all new hoses and a heater valve that were just sitting in the box. I should have left well enough alone but I don't seem to be able to do that. Don't fix what isn't broken-amen.

Geeze, don't you just HATE it when you get what you asked for? :flipoff2:

You need to re-read Photoman's sig line..."If it aint broke, fix it until it is".

Pulling the heater core is a MAJOR MAJOR job. The entire dash has to come out. You *might* even need to evacuate the AC system and pull the evaporator core. Hope that hose holds!

Oof! Maybe its a good thing someone else bought that FJ62 today that I had been looking at. I like things simple.

What are you worried about Andrew? It's the middle of freakin July!

Bypass that sucker and cogitate on it until fall.

Oh yeah, looks like there are tubes on the inside going to the core.
(don't look at SOR.com's price list unless you're sitting down)

Thanks Pismo-I saw SOR's pic and price. I'm hoping C-Dan will come through for me on that pipe withought buying the entire assembly. My motivation for replacing all the 20 year old hoses is driving all that way to Surf and Turf, and by November, I'll need heat. There is a factory proceedure for removing the dash-I'll have to dive in and see. If it gets too hairy, I'll be parting out a nice FJ60! I'm stoked for Dusy-see you soon.

I did all the cooling hoses (and all the vacuum hoses) on Knuckles a couple years ago. It was a regular hose fest! Those heater hoses on the firewall were some of the worst, it seemed like they were welded on.

BTW, how is it that you're getting ready for November's Surf N Turf and I'm only *thinking* about getting ready for next week's Dusy? Oh yeah, I know.... I'm a lazy procrastenator.

Actually, I just finished replacing my PS pump (thanks C-Dan!) and added an oil cooler and filter while I was there. Plus, it shouldn't be too big of a rush to get ready for next week since I didn't hardly unpack from Rubithon. :)
