So, I'm putting in my Bilsteins and need to know, for the front, where the metal spacer tube goes - top of shock, or bottom. My directions are not clear as to which mounting hardware goes on top or bottom. I have a type 13 and a type 6 - as the label reads:

F4-B46-1477-HO
Typ 13 / Typ 6

I'm guessing Typ 13 is top and uses metal spacer tube?

Thanks for any clarification.

It has been a wile since I have installed my bilsteins and I do not specifically remember where that spacer went but have an Idea take a look at the shocks and see if this makes sense

IIRC the end near the body of the shock has a shouldered thread, if so then no spacer would be needed at that end, the nut seats on the shoulder setting the preload distance on the bushings,

At the rod end it is just a long all one diameter thread so that the boot can be installed the spacer goes over that to give the nut something to seat against

Make sense? without the shocks in front of me I may be way off.

I see your logic. Looks right and I think I deduced from the instructions that your way is the correct way. Thanks.

On the rear, wow! That top nut is difficult to get to. Do I assume correctly that the shock is all that comes away from the body, or am I to remove the mounting bracket? Seems like both are a nightmare, so I'm thinking just the shock.
Any tips on the rear......

And THANKS!

I pulled the whole bracket, just two bolts on each, was real easy to buld it up outside the truck

BTW my shocks came with diffrent sized bushings, the instructions only showed same size bushigns, so I put the thicker ones towards the inside to slightly increase the effective shock length as I plan to do a mild lift at some point and the billies are a littls short for a lift. this will not truely make much of a diffrence (3/8" IIRC?) but had to pick a side so that is what I went with.

the instructions take a few minutes of interpritation, they are small very pictures with slight wariations from one to the next, you have to scan for the small details , I wish they had just put in model specific instructiosn instead of instructiosn that cover every possible shock mount style.

Going out to do the rears now. I'm taking your advice and pulling the top mount. I agree with your choice of locations for the bushings. I did the same.

Thanks for the pics too!

Got'er done! So far the Bilsteins are performing well. I need to try them out on some of our highways under construction before I say much more.

Thanks for the help.
