I need a bit of help concerning my 1989 FJ62. I've got about a 2.5 lift and running 33's on it and maybe going to 35's at some point. My question is this..What would be the optimum gears to put in to get it pretty close to the stock ratio with the stock tire size ? At this point the tranny seems to do a lot of hunting and searching for the correct gear on anything but level ground. Thanx !!

I'm running 4.88 w/ 35" and the speedo is 2 mph slow according to the GPS. Although an FJ60 stock gearing is higher at 3.73.

4.56

i was considering 4.56 w/ an h55f trans.if you want to keep the 4 speed 4.88 will be optimal.just my .02 cents. john:hmm:

This is very much a personal use and preference question. Each person is going to have an Idea on what they like and what they use the truck for. Do you mostly drive it on the road or do you spend a lot of time running trails and events. Going to 4.56's will give you a better ratio than you have now and will give you good highway speed and fuel economy but will not be the best setup for off road. Going to 4.88 will make for better off road ratios but will make run higher rpms at highway speed and reduce gas milage. Going to 35 is not just a matter of sliding on wheels. To keep it from rubbing you will need to go SOA or a body lift so make sure you are going to go this far before you set up your truck with that thought in mind.

I'm probably not going to go to 35's anytime soon, if ever. Pretty satisfied with the 33's really. I'm more concerned with the on-road aspect as far as the gearing goes. Not going to subject the 62 to any more serious off-road stuff, she's done all that and needs to be "pampered" now !!

Then I would go with the 2:56 gearing option. Lot of money though just to change one gear set.

2:56 or 2:57 whatever it takes;)
I'd also go with the 4:56 given your input on driving habits

:eek:Based on his explaination, i was thinking 2's in the front and 2:56 in the rear so you can look like your doing burnouts. Guess I out to proof read once in a while:eek:

The link mentioned above for gear ratio calc's is very useful...

Assuming 33's (which are usually 32 actual), and the overdrive on the 62 is 0.71 (I think). Then 70 mph gives ~2350 rpm with 4.56 and ~2550 with 4.88. Really, no important difference so far below the redline. Mileage will be affected by the vehicle speed more than the engine rpm. The fuel mileage on a 60 is very sensitive to speed (since it's shaped like a brick). The 4.88's will give you a very "perky" truck, and will help a lot off-road. Unless top speed is your goal on the highway, that's the way I'd go.

That pretty insuliting to a brick aerodynamics. I am fairly sure the brick did better in the wind tunnel.

"These calculations are assuming a manual transmission with a 1:1 ratio"

The 62 has an overdrive unit.
