I have a 1988 FJ62 with 143k miles and just noticed a rattling sound coming from the engine or transmission. To best descibe the sound....it sounds like a rattling heat shield but nothing is lose under my L/C. The sound comes and goes and only happens when I accerate from a standing start at about 50% throttle. It starts making the noise and goes away after a couple of seconds. The sound comes and goes and is not very frequent. I did noticed that it does take a little bit of hard driving for the sound to come out but overall very infrequent.

The sound is not of grinding gears but a rattle. Sorry but trying my best to explain.

The car shifts fine through all gears and no slipping or anything like that.

I raley put in 4WD but the sound start right after I place it 4WD both low and high.

This really irritates me so please help.

Thanks in advance.

Could it be your fan hitting the shroud. A broken motor mount would cause it to rub under accelleration

Mine does the same sound! haven't been able to pin point it. I know it's not my CAT since it's new. I'll have to check those solutions out also.

You mention that the sound started after you put it into 4W. Does the sound go away when back in 2W?

I've tried to go back and forth from 2WD to 4WD and back but the sound comes back. I'm glad in a way that someone else has a similar noise. Maybe we'll find out what it is and help each other out.

Thanks for the input so far.

could be a faulty one way check valve. mine makes the same sound while at idle and just a litlle above. This is the one way check valve going to the exhaust from the air injection rail. Mine currently just spews exhaust fumes into the engine bay. I will be replacing soon.

I have a similar sound and I think it is the fan hitting the shroud. I'm going to have the engine mounts checked when I take it in to my mechanic. I was under the truck a week ago and can't tell, but don't have a jack that can nudge the engine around to check.

tryng shakng your exhaust next time your under there
could have a broken hanger or somethnig

the fan hittng the shroud is a hideous ratcheting sound
if our curious look at your fan blades and they will let you know

iif you put it in four low and prop the hood open you can see the motor then with it in four low pull hte ebrake and step on the gas with it in gear you will see the motor almost come out of the compartment if its broken

My '82 had a odd rattling sound that I couldn't pinpoint other than it seemed like it was coming from the front of the engine. Then my harmonic balancer failed at the rivets. The rattling sound was the front half of the pulley coming loose.

yikes

any damage?

No. The power steering immediately lost boost, the alt light came on and the temp gauge shot up to hot. I was able to pull over quickly and shut it down. I had it towed back home. The loose part of the balancer had landed inside the fan shroud - no damage to the radiator. Fortunately I was able to find a relatively cheap donor in a junkyard. You don't want to know what a new balancer costs.

there is a shield covering your sterring rod/joint in front of your sterring box. check it.they have been known to come loose:beer:

x2 on shaking the exhaust system. My cat was hitting the shield when I took off from a stop. Turned out to be the rubber mounts had broken and the whole exhaust would bounce up and down.
Also check your alternator and make sure that the belt tentioning bolt has not come loose. Mine came off and luckily all the pieces were caught underneath and I was able to find them all.

i get what i think is the same sound right at start up but after the motor gets started, within 1 second probably, the sound goes away. It definatly sounds like a heat shield so i do not think I am worried about it.

Once i find it i will let you know.

lunyou

A rattle as in it could be engine pinging? Mine used to ping under heavy load every so often, or at a start on a steep grade. Just a thought.

I think pinging too, try some better fuel.

Find my rattle!

I found it!

Stupid MAF exhaust kit. the 4 plus shackles are F'en huge so it rubs on the bolt during idle, well at least thats when I hear it the most.

(look at the furthest bolt)

Well, you might just want to give me that MAF exhaust then.
