I realize Im doubling up on my questions but I've been meaning to post this one for a while and just forgot until I posted my headliner question. Anyway.

So...what the hell is that rattle? No it's not the exhaust shields, I've checked those thoroughly and in this shot I had clamps on them to prevent any vibrations. It sounds like its coming from the back header. I have good compression and my plugs look even, there is and always has been a little stumble at idle but I understand thats pretty common. What is the world is this?

Probably a cracked wye pipe. $20 at local exhaust shop and you'll be good.

start with a cold engine and get your hand around the flanges, headers, etc. see if you can feel air. Check exhaust manifold studs. This problem is pretty much up to you to feel for the leak or pay someone to.

Just got a rattle on my truck last week, thinking it's either catalytic converter or torque converter bolts backing out. Leaning more towards the converters as they are OEM at 287k miles and get REALLY hot due to being clogged.

I just replaced the gasket on the back y pipe. it was bad and the exhaust is quieter but still rattle. it was the only leak I could detect using a helper with a rag.

why do you suspect the torque converter bolts? I ask because my shifting has been just a little harsh and chunky lately.

I'll check in with a shop and see what they can find. my other theory is there is a hole underneath the heat shield on the y pipe.

Okay, so its the y pipe alright. 2 exhaust shops said they can't weld it. Any options besides the magnaflo y-pipe? putties/bonding agents?

Find the shop in the bad part of town that works for cash.

Take $20 cash with you and ask if he can weld a hole in a 409SS wye pipe.

The other shops are just trying to get you to install a new system.

Tell them your mother or mother in law just went into the hospital and you don't have time or money for a full system right now. You need it fixed so you can drive to Illinois tomorrow.

this is disturbingly specific. are you spending to much time in the bad parts of town?

No, cause it's exactly what I had to do.

The Midas or "regular muffler shops" all told me they couldn't for some stupid reason for liability. They just didn't want to waste their time and not sell a full system.

The other guy is hungry and he will take cash because he doesn't have to claim it. Since then, I have sent two other 80 guys to him and he built a full system for one and repaired the other.

It's all about the story.........

i love it. gotta get my story together.

The other option is to pay a little more & find a shop with SS wire squirter & tri-mix shield gas - the marine places here have them - if you have any SS fab industry in your area like food processing equipment builders, they mainly TIG b/c SS MIG splatters more than std steel - but some shops mask & MIG.

But the hard luck story & just getting patched with steel wire works too.

While you’re down there, check how much of the O2 sensor nuts are still there - I was thinking you rusted the nuts nearly off & had bad blowby.

I found out the hard way the nuts are cheap steel & when they rust away, the O2 sensor blows out of the pipe like a champagne cork.

Upside is chase the stud threads w/ a die, a new gasket & 2 SS metric nuts, problem solved.

new sensors and bolts... which is nice. no marine industry in Utah though

Haha, yeah - that’s why food processing equipment builders came to mind.

You’re right - boat builders in Utah are like a ski resort in the Everglades :p

I went to change out the the two doughnut gaskets in my Y-pipe today and found that it was almost cracked in half.

I had to weld all the way around and the V section as well...before welding the v section I put in a brace to keep it from closing up...but even with doing that its off a bit, gunna have to heat it up with a torch to get it to fit...but im saving money, right?..lol

Nope, needs welding or purchase a new one......not sure how long my welds will hold up on mine because the metal gets brittle over time, lots of heating and cooling...
