I know they're rare, but just how rare are they?

Anyone knows a ballpark figure of how many were made? Compared to the LJ78 and KZJ78 Prados?

Not rare in Japan as I believe that was the main destination. Outside of Japan they are few and far between and most seem to be RH drive. There is a lot more of the LJ/KZ 78/79 series because they were exported to many markets inc Europe, Asia , Africa and S America as well as being a big seller in Japan.
How rare are they? Its like asking how longs a piece of string,. Rarity is in the mind of the beholder and depends on where you are standing in the world.
I dont have any sales figures , they are also hard to find. Most of the sales figures lump all landcruisers into one and are shown as units per country.

Did the light duty LJ/KZJ styles come with a gasser? Like a 22re or something? I keep thinking one of those would be a great mild offroad/expedition cruiser.

I think there was a RJ77. Personally I'd hate to have a 22RE in a LJ78 or KZJ78 (based on my experience of it in a 450kg lighter 4Runner). Would be woefully underpowered, (and thirsty) moving so much weight around. Add more weight to make an expo rig, and I don't think it would last.

Factory 2LTE isn't that much better, but with a bit of tuning makes substantially more torque and moves the LJ78 around great. 1KZTE of course makes great power.

Hmm. I just love those 78's and don't have the need (or money) to look for the heavy duty HZJ77 in good shape. I'd brainstormed the idea of a 22RE or 1UZ in a canadian 78 with bad head.

1UZ is definitely the way to go over a 22R. It's a proven solution, and makes suitable power. 78's are awesome little cruisers, and it's only the overheating/head issues that have prevented them from being really popular. Overcome that and you have a winner. They are one of the best bang for the buck cruisers out there. I almost went 1UZ this winter, but decided to give the 2LTE another year and a few more upgrades. Going to evans waterless coolant, and upgrading to a modern mitsubishi turbo over the next couple months.

I take it you're in Canada? I have been tossing the idea of buying one and bringing it to the states for awhile now. What kind of mileage do you get out of the 2LTE real world?

I get 11.5l-12.5l/100km on the highway, and about 14-15l/100km in the city. I drive it aggressively, and the highway/city driving where I live is basically worst case (lots of hills, lights, corners etc.). Also, thats with an Auto, it's lifted, with larger tires.

If you do buy one, make sure you go with the evans waterless coolant asap to prevent head issues (prevents localized boiling in the head that causes the metal to fatigue and crack). There are a number of other things that can be done to increase power and decrease egts/coolant temps, but ultimately the only thing that will prevent damage from heat is waterless coolant. Don't want to scare you, but you do need to be aware of the issue if you are considering buying a LJ78.

Good summary Rosco.. There are plenty here in Japan. They are the priciest Cruiser with older models still up around what you can buy the new gasser 70 for brand new. Prado's are a dime a dozen as well. The LJ's are cheap cheap but the 3L's are still a little pricey. Nothing compared to the HZ's though.

Oh I've read quite a lot on the 2LTE. Crusher and others have extolled their negative virtues. Lol. If I bought one, it would be with the thought in mind that the 2LTE would suffer its demise at some point sooner rather than later.

They do have gasser but it's called rj77.
Which is 22r carb..i dont know if they ever produced 22re rj77..though It is quite underpowered and fuel guzzler(18-20l/100km city) but then considering its durability, I would take it over 2lte.maybe anytime
