I am selling my Ramsey PTO and a couple people have asked if this will fit on their '76 or '78 FJ40s. Here is what I know. This unit bolts on to the back of the transfer case. So everything should work just fine there. What I don't know is this.

Question: Does the transfer case on a 4spd sit further back in the FJ40 than the 3spd? If so, then the buyer would need a longer PTO drive shaft. Right?

Question #2: Are the 3spd transfer cases the same as the 4spd?

Any help is extremely appreciated.

Thanks,

Dave

it's hard for me to tell from that picture, i think that pto has a 16 spline input? if so it should work with any cruiser with a four speed AND one piece transfer case.
the three speed has a different output shaft (10 spline) and would require a diferent input gear on your pto.
hope this helps, carl

Carl,

Thanks for your help. I now have a new question.

The piece that is pictured in this post doesn't rely on the the spline count. Rather this piece slides over the output shaft and meets up with the PTO unit.

Question: Is the 10 spline the same diameter as the 16 spline? I didn't completely install this PTO unit, but I know this pictured piece was a snug fit.

Thanks

Dave

The Ramsey PTO drive will only work with the 3 speed transmission.

It attaches to the rear of the output shaft on the transmission. Some of the Advance Adapters kits for various transmissions (420, 465) to the 3 speed case might work. The plate adapter for any transmission won't.

I have that winch on my 71 3-speed equiped cruiser. Think I might go electric when I do my restore/renovate. How much are you selling yours for? Don't worry about competition to sell from me as mine is in California and it won't be for sale for two or three more months.

I have it on ebay right now. Not the slightest clue what it will go for. I haven't seen a complete Ramsey winch setup on ebay yet, so I don't have anything to compare it to.

You might do better if you sell it as a Jeep thing because those were part of kits sold for use on Jeeps in the 1950s and '60's. Somebody adapted it to work on your cruiser, if it did, but most adaptations of that PTO drive were kinda' strange unless they used a Toyota PTO drive.

(I have a Ramsey PTO winch that was on a 1972 FJ40 but it was driven by a Toyota PTO takeout that bolts in the plate covered location on all one piece transfer cases.)

That Ramsey was also rumored to be a dealer installed option. The PTO gear box is specific to 3sp Land Cruisers. I have seen it adapted to 4sp Cruisers by cutting the center out of the gear and welding in a 16 spline section cut from another gear.

Is that a Ramsey 2000 PTO Winch? If so my setup looks nothing like that! Thanks alot P/O:mad:

My winch looks similar to the one in your avitar. I'm don't have a clue what a Ramsey 2000 PTO winch is, so I am unable to answer your question.

The model number on mine is 200R-558 if this helps.

I had that PTO unit on my '70 before my SM420/plate adapter swap, but never had the winch.

Still have it sitting around: I'll be interested to see what it goes for.

I've got the ramsey pto manual and parts blow up list in pdf from my orig 64 if anyone needs it. I think i sent it to warrior or someone else so feel free to pass it along.

Yep, you gave me that PDF. I really appreciate it.

Thanks again.
