Just wanted to know what is included in doing a major tune up to an EF motor.? What stuff gets serviced and replaced? Tried doing a search but didnt find much info.

My rig isnt running so well so i was wondering what parts i would need to order from CDan...!!

Thanks in advance

Cap, rotor, wires, spark plugs, air filter, etc, etc. And for God's sake, use Toyota OEM parts (personal preference here).

What is "isn't running so well?"

Bad idle, hesitation, shifting, knocking, etc, etc, etc? Too many possibilities to conjur up with the info provided.

Well,
I am not sure on what you would need as "running well " is pretty subjective.
I will however tell you to start with a few things.
1. check the accordian hoses fore and aft of the mass air flow body. these crack with age and will make you run like poo.
2. check the egr valve and actuator, also check all of teh vacuum tubes coming in and out and the ones that bolt to the MAF line.
3. replace the plugs cap and rotor and test your plug wires for resistance, or if you are lazy like me with 200+k on your motor just replace them.

These are the easy things to check out after that you will have to report back with specific symptoms for diagnoses.

R&R?? Also, it's a 3FE.

Aren't you pondering the dual battery setup? If so, you really ought to have a FSM, which also spells out exactly what/when neads to be inspected/replaced. (Ie, a maintenance schedule.) This information is also in your owner's manual; read it and follow it.

Oh, and even the Hayne's manual has a pretty good paragraph on what exactly constitutes a "minor" and "major" tune-up for a vehicle with an unknown maintenance history.

Thanks for the quick feedback. I know that the engine is underpowered but when I drive it, i get some some hesitation when i am driving down the road at around 50mph. engine idles good.. I have an exhaust leak that i can hear, that is so annoying, going to take it to an exhaust shop and see what they tell me.. the sounds is coming near the headers and intake manifold. you can only hear it when i accelarate.. The engine has 265k on it, she has been sitting for a few months just started driving her eveyrday again. Dont know when the last tune up was done, so i wanted to go ahead and do everythign at once so i wont have anymore problems. I have been out wheeling with her twice, havent beating her up a lot but only when i going up a hill or getting stuck.

I am going to do injectors, brakes (front and back), oil change, plugs, new K&N filter. Is there anything else you think i would need to do that i am missing or forgot.

Second checking the cracked hosing into the throttle body, hear of that way too often. When was the last time you changed your O2 sensors? They're really $$$, but help considerably if all else is in good shape.

If you are getting a hissing from around the heders look really closely at the egr section and related vacuum tubing. if you have a leak in the headers then it will play hell with the o2 sensors.

Sounds like you just need a tune up...

run all new vac hoses. cap, rotor, plugs, wires, valve adj, throttle body cleaning... its getting up there in age but can be rather quick if in tune.

I am going to look around all my vacuum lines, b.c come to think of it, i went out wheeling to alpha, rode through water, and no noise at all when i came home. The next day i went to turn it on is when i started hearing the noise... it is a hissing noise that is loud enough to hear from the inside driving down the highway. I have had a check engine light on once or twice but it usually just turns off. I havent changed my O2 sensors. How may are there??? I did have a leak in my Throttlebody hosing and i did change that out.

two, one on each pipe coming down from the manifolds and before the cats.
I would look there first but I would not be surprised if the maf tubes are cracked as well.

I have read through the last of this thread, and if you are going to take it to an exhaust shop I am just going to assume you are not...how do you say it?....savvy as a mechanic...

As such, I would recommend skipping the exhaust shop and go to a good mechanic or Toyota stealership-they will look for warpage in your manifolds, EGR related stuff, etc, etc, etc. Most exhaust shops I know are good with tubing and a welder-but not so savvy themselves with the other mechanical wingdings-but I say most...

Hi, my name is Ed and this is my first post so go easy on me. I am not a mechanic or as knowledgeable as a lot of the people here but I just bought a 91 fj80 with 87k and am starting to get acquainted with it while catching up on some maintenance it needs. Your situation seemed similar to mine so here goes.

If you don't have the manual it might help to get one. I don't think I would have found the timing mark without it as I'm used to old small block chevys and was looking on the front of the motor.

There is a thread that I found helpful on this site about getting a little more performance out of your 3fe. I'm sure you could find it with a quick search. One of the things someone said helped was to clean the deposits out of the injectors and intake manifold. Since I don't have time to take everything apart I am going to try some fuel system cleaner on it and see if it helps. The guy at the auto parts store said it might be a good idea to do this before putting in the new fuel filter so the old filter would catch anything that got cleaned out before that. It made sense to me and I thought it might help you too.

Good luck with your project!

Ed

Ed, Welcome to the forum.. You will see that everyone here is pretty cool and friendly.. Wow a 91 with 87k.. thats awesome mileage.. post some pics!!!! Thanks for the advice i think i will try some fuel cleaner to see if it will work before i decide to send out my injector for a cleaning.. thanks and Good luck...!!!
