Good morning everyone and happy memorial day weekend.

One of my fj60's is making a constant noise in first, second and third. Quiet in 4th.
When in nuetral,...... with the clutch not pressed it also makes a grinding or bad bearing sound.
What gives?????:bang: is this my main shaft bearing starting to go on the tranny?
This is a 85 fj60 fully stock with 91,000 miles.
Thanks for any and all advise.

Something is bad inside the transmission. Any flakes of metal in the oil? Did it ever run low on oil?

It's a near certainty that you have a bad bearing, so order up a rebuild kit ($200) and get busy. It isn't as heard as you might think.

counter shaft

bearing would be my guess, since ther is no load on the bearing during 4th speed operation (1.1 ratio) most of the load is in your main shaft while in 4th.definitely needs an overhaul:cool:

john:hmm:

Look at the countershaft bearings. it is quiet in 4th because there is no load on the countershaft when it is in 4th.

Mark...

SAME EXACT issue I have in my truck. Also narrowed down to a counter shaft bearing. The good news is, from what I could find about it, this never becomes a catastrophic failure. Just annoying. I have another 4 spd ready to go but I've been holding off on it.

the input shaft has two bearings, one in the front and one at the rear of the input, the rear bearing is probably the one making the noise sense in fourth gear that bearing does not turn:wrench:

Its been doing this for a year or so.
We just drove it to Alaska from Utah and it ran great the whole way. It is just annoying as hell!
I think I'll take cruiserdrews advise and order up the parts. Where should I order from Drew?
Tearing into a transmission scares me a bit!
Gotta start sometime.........I guess?

I'd order from Mudrak or CruiserOutfitters, but others sell the same kit.

The only real difficult part about the tranny is the tear down. The countershaft bearings have to be pulled BEFORE you do anything with the main shaft. It takes a special (Expensive) gear puller. The proceedure is well described in the FSM.
