I am curious about how long I should be letting my 13BT run before and after driving it. I have been told that I should let it run so the turbo can cool after long trips. How long is long and does temp outside play a factor. I am not sure if there is a general rule of thumb but this is my first desil and first turbo so i need some help. Thanks.

It deppends how hard and long is your trip .. but usually for city driving 30 segs is enought ..

Alfter 1 hour of HW driving over 2000 rpm I let it 1 min .. after 2 hours 2 min .. and more than hours I let it at least 5 mins .. max 10 mins if is a relly long trip like 6 or more hours driving ..

All is for my 1HD-T and for sure my future 2H tubroed :D

I had a turbo timer on mine, it had 1, 3, and 5 minute settings. 1 min for short drives, 3 mins for just just off the hightway, 5 mins is a long time - maybe overkill, but i guess after working really hard.

The length of idling time is DIRECTLY dependent on the EGT's so you NEED a pyrometer.
Sometimes I can shut my truck off right away, other times it needs several minutes of cool down time. It depends more on how hard the truck was working than on how long you were driving etc.

I was wondering where the pyro would be located? I have a timer and it's self adjusting so I'd assumed this was how it determined when to shut down.

.. with newer tdi motors i've heard it is better to start these up cold and drive with low rpms to warm them up rather than idle to warm - would this be advised for these motors also?

My pyrometer is located in the exhaust manifold pre-turbo to record MAXIMUM temperatures. Other folks install them post-turbo on the exhaust down pipe due to concerns about disintegrating pyrometer probes. Unless your timer has a probe for heat it's not measuring heat.
